  • Tommie Lee & Julez Smith Romance Rumors Spark Debate

Age-gap relationships are a constant topic of cultural debate, and the latest conversation was ignited by rumors surrounding “Love & Hip Hop” star Tommie Lee and Julez Smith, the 21-year-old son of Solange Knowles. Videos circulating online appeared to show Lee, 41, flirting with Smith, leading to a flurry of reactions on social media.

A 20-Year Age Gap and Familiar Faces

The age difference alone—20 years—raised eyebrows, but what particularly caught social media’s attention was that Lee is two years older than Julez’s mother, Solange Knowles, who is 39. This detail quickly fueled discussions about the dynamics and potential implications of such relationships.

Many users expressed concern, with some labeling the situation as “predatory” and highlighting that Julez’s frontal lobe may not be fully developed. Comparisons were drawn to other age-gap relationships that have previously dominated headlines.

    Addressing the Rumors

Tommie Lee indirectly addressed the chatter on her Instagram Stories, posting “I’m not that typa girl #nexttopic.” However, by then, the internet had already moved on to a broader discussion about age-gap relationships, particularly those involving older women and younger men.

The Rise of ‘Reverse Age Gap’ Relationships

The phenomenon of older women dating younger men, sometimes called the “reverse age gap,” is becoming increasingly common. According to Psychology Today, factors contributing to this trend include women rejecting the idea of an “expiration date” on desirability, a preference for the emotional maturity and progressive views of younger men, and a shift towards seeking self-expansion rather than just security in relationships.

While age-gap relationships have often been viewed as taboo, the dynamic of an older woman with a younger man can face particular scrutiny, often contrasted with the more commonly discussed scenario of older men with younger partners. This has led to calls for educating young men about the potential dangers of such dynamics, mirroring conversations had about young women.

    Community Concerns and Double Standards

Regardless of whether anything is actually happening between Tommie Lee and Julez Smith, the intense reaction highlights ongoing societal views on relationships and age. The conversation raises important questions about how communities protect young Black men from potentially exploitative situations, while also examining how Black women’s romantic choices are policed.

  • HBCU Enrollment Gap: Commission Tackles Decline

A significant issue facing higher education is the declining enrollment of Black men at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). To tackle this growing concern, the U.S. Commission on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys convened its first business meeting of FY26 on March 24, 2026, to delve into the problem.

    Examining the Enrollment Gap

Chaired by U.S. Rep. Frederica S. Wilson (D-Fl.), the virtual meeting, themed “Closing the Gap: Addressing Declining Black Male Enrollment at HBCUs and Other Colleges,” brought together commissioners and staff. The session aimed to scrutinize the reasons behind this downward trend and brainstorm potential solutions.

The discussion underscored the vital historical role HBCUs have played in fostering the success of Black men. However, it also confronted the recent challenges and the contributing factors to the enrollment decrease. Commission Director Marik Xavier-Brier was set to present initial findings.

    Factors Contributing to the Decline

Preliminary findings are expected to shed light on various issues, including financial barriers that make college less accessible, gaps in college readiness among students coming from the K–12 pipeline, and the institutional pressures faced by HBCUs. The increasing competition from predominantly white institutions was also noted as a factor.

Beyond academic and financial hurdles, the meeting also explored broader cultural shifts and workforce dynamics that might influence the enrollment decisions of Black men. Understanding these multifaceted influences is crucial for developing effective strategies.

    Proposing Solutions and Action Steps

Early recommendations discussed include enhancing targeted financial aid programs, boosting investment in HBCU infrastructure to improve facilities and resources, and strengthening pipeline programs designed to better prepare students for the rigors of college. Commissioners engaged in focused discussions to reverse this trend.

    • Expanding targeted financial aid for students.
    • Increasing investment in HBCU infrastructure.
    • Strengthening K-12 pipeline programs for college readiness.
    • Addressing cultural and workforce dynamics influencing enrollment.

The session concluded with a plan for concrete action steps, including sharing findings with Congress and the Department of Education. The commission also intends to collaborate with major organizations like the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, UNCF, the National Urban League, and the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance to amplify efforts.

What do you believe are the most critical factors affecting Black male enrollment at HBCUs? Share your thoughts and potential solutions in the comments below!

  • Miss Hamilton’s Fight for Respect Changed Courtrooms

Imagine being called to testify in court, only to be deliberately denied the basic courtesy of a title that was routinely given to others. This was the reality for many Black Americans during the Civil Rights era, and it was a fight for simple respect that propelled activist Mary Hamilton all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

A Stand for Dignity in Gadsden

In June 1963, Mary Hamilton, a dedicated civil rights activist and Freedom Rider, was called to testify in Gadsden, Alabama. Her testimony was crucial for a hearing challenging the legitimacy of mass arrests during civil rights protests. However, when the Etowah County Solicitor, William Rayburn, addressed every white witness as “Miss” or “Mr.” but referred to Hamilton only by her first name, “Mary,” she refused to answer.

Hamilton, who was a field secretary for the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and a pioneer in organizing in the South, understood the deliberate nature of this slight. In the Jim Crow South, denying Black individuals honorifics like Mr., Mrs., or Miss was a systematic way to assert racial hierarchy and dehumanize Black communities. Hamilton firmly stated, “My name is Miss Hamilton. Please address me correctly… I will not answer a question… until I am addressed correctly.”

From Contempt to the Supreme Court

Despite her lawyer’s attempts to correct the solicitor, Rayburn continued to address her by her first name, and Hamilton held her ground, refusing to respond. Judge A.B. Cunningham found her in contempt of court, imposing a $50 fine and a five-day jail sentence. Hamilton refused to pay the fine and was released on bond to pursue an appeal.

Her case was eventually appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court with the support of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF). LDF lawyers argued that Hamilton’s reaction was not mere “thin-skinned sensitivity” but a response to a “distinct indicia of the racial caste system” – the refusal of whites to grant titles of respect to Black individuals.

    A Landmark Ruling for Dignity

In March 1964, the Supreme Court overturned Hamilton’s contempt citation. The ruling was clear and powerful: every individual appearing in a United States courtroom deserved to be addressed with dignity, irrespective of their race. This victory, though perhaps not widely remembered today, made national headlines and significantly impacted courtroom protocols.

Mary Hamilton’s legacy extends beyond this pivotal court case. After her impactful work with CORE, she returned to her passion for education, earning a Master of Arts in Teaching and dedicating her life to shaping young minds until her retirement. Her fight for respect serves as a vital reminder that the struggle for dignity and against demeaning stereotypes continues.

    • Mary Hamilton refused to answer court questions when denied the title ‘Miss’.
    • Her refusal stemmed from the systemic denial of respect to Black individuals.
    • She was initially found in contempt of court and fined.
    • The U.S. Supreme Court overturned her conviction in 1964.
    • The ruling affirmed the right to be addressed with dignity in courtrooms.

  • DMX’s Ex-Wife Tashera Simmons on Trauma and Love

It’s a tough lesson many learn the hard way: you can’t save someone else if you’re not saving yourself first. Tashera Simmons, the ex-wife of the late rapper DMX, is sharing her profound insights from a 15-year marriage that was deeply impacted by addiction, infidelity, and unresolved childhood trauma on both sides. She recently sat down with Angie Martinez on the “IRL” podcast to discuss her journey, which is also the focus of her new documentary, “X vs. Earl: The Simmons Family Speaks.”

A Love Story Marred by Pain

Simmons described the love between her and DMX, whose real name was Earl Simmons, as “pure” and “unique.” However, their relationship was also shadowed by the darker realities of his struggles with drug use and infidelity. Crucially, neither of them had healed from the childhood traumas that shaped their lives, adding another layer of complexity to their marriage.

She believes Earl passed away with a heavy heart, feeling misunderstood. “I feel like Earl died very unhappy with a broken heart. Misunderstood,” Simmons shared, reflecting on the pain that lingered for both of them throughout their marriage, which lasted from 1999 to 2014.

Filling the Void: Earl Became Everything

Simmons revealed that she and Earl met as teenagers, both coming from difficult backgrounds where they felt abandoned. Her mother left her at 14, and her father was verbally abusive. Because of this, Earl became her entire world, filling multiple roles: “husband, boyfriend, best friend, God. Protector.”

This intense, all-encompassing connection, which she described as a “project to get away from Tashera,” is what kept her in the marriage for so long. Even when faced with significant betrayals, her instinct was to try and fix things. “I wanted to save Earl,” she admitted. “I saw the road that Earl was going down.”

The Hard Truth: You Can’t Save Someone Else

Looking back, Simmons recognizes how unhealthy the situation became, especially with Earl stepping outside the marriage and creating other families. She credits a higher power for ultimately removing her from the relationship, stating, “Had God not stripped me from that relationship, that marriage, I’d have probably been in a Looney Tune home.” Now, she’s unafraid to speak her truth, emphasizing the importance of not bottling up emotions or pretending everything is fine.

When asked for advice for young women in similar situations, Simmons’ message is clear and direct: walk away. “You cannot fix nobody,” she stated firmly. “There is nothing that you can do for someone who has been broken, who’s bitter, who doesn’t have the right perspective for their self, there’s no saving. There’s no saving them.”

Tashera Simmons’ story is a powerful reminder about self-preservation and the complexities of love and trauma. What are your thoughts on her journey and advice? Share your perspective in the comments below!

  • Ulta Beauty Sued Over Alleged Hair Discrimination

Imagine booking a salon appointment, only to be told they can’t style your hair because it’s not the ‘kind’ they do. That’s the distressing experience a Black mother and her young daughter allege they faced at an Ulta Beauty salon in New York City, leading to a lawsuit claiming racial discrimination.

Allegations of Discrimination at Ulta Beauty

The lawsuit, filed by Lauren Smith and her seven-year-old daughter, centers on an incident that occurred in July 2025 at the Ulta Beauty store on East 86th Street. According to Smith, employees denied them service, citing their hair’s ‘type’ and ‘texture’ and claiming inexperience with ‘your kind of hair.’ Smith asserts that neither she nor her daughter’s hair was even examined, despite having confirmed appointments.

The situation reportedly unfolded publicly, causing significant humiliation to Ms. Smith and deep distress to her daughter. The young girl was reportedly left crying hysterically, questioning why her hair was different and why she couldn’t receive service, especially when seeing images of diverse customers in the store’s advertisements.

    Pretext for Discrimination?

The assigned stylist, identified as “Jessica C.,” allegedly stated she was “not comfortable” styling their hair. The store manager, Mohammed Salam, reportedly supported this decision and further criticized Smith and her daughter for not pre-identifying their hair texture when booking. The plaintiffs argue that these stated reasons were merely a cover for race-based discrimination.

This lawsuit comes at a time when Ulta Beauty has often promoted its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The company has faced similar accusations in the past, responding in 2019 by emphasizing its dedication to equality and ongoing diversity training for employees.

    Legal Framework and Demands

Smith’s legal action contends that Ulta’s refusal to serve her and her daughter violates New York State Human Rights Law. This law specifically prohibits discrimination based on characteristics associated with race, including hair texture. Furthermore, the suit alleges a breach of New York State cosmetology licensing laws, updated in May 2024, which mandate that stylists be trained to serve all hair types and textures.

The lawsuit seeks financial damages for the distress and humiliation experienced. Additionally, the plaintiffs are requesting mandatory training for salon employees on diversity and inclusivity, aiming to prevent such incidents from happening again.

What are your thoughts on this Ulta Beauty lawsuit? Have you or someone you know experienced similar discrimination? Share your experiences and opinions in the comments below.

  • Dawn Staley Gifts HBCU Team Luxury Ahead of NCAA Tournament

In a heartwarming gesture just before a major NCAA Tournament showdown, legendary coach Dawn Staley offered the Southern University Lady Jaguars a special taste of luxury. This thoughtful act highlights Staley’s commitment to uplifting HBCU programs and the high standards she’s set in women’s basketball.

A Touch of Luxury Before March Madness

Following their hard-fought First Four victory over Samford, the Southern University women’s basketball team received an unexpected visit from South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley. Staley, a prominent figure in the sport and a proud HBCU alum herself, came bearing gifts: samples of her signature Louis Vuitton fragrance. This small but significant gesture offered the Lady Jaguars a tangible glimpse into the world of elite-level luxury associated with top-tier athletic success.

For an HBCU program navigating the intense environment of the NCAA Tournament, Staley’s gift was more than just a present. It served as a powerful symbol of visibility, investment, and the care that can be extended to these often-underestimated teams. It was a moment that resonated deeply, especially amidst the high stakes of March Madness.

    More Than Just a Coach

Southern guard Mykayla Cunningham shared her appreciation for Staley’s presence, noting, “Her being here, getting to hear the words she had for our team, it was just great.” Cunningham acknowledged Staley’s busy schedule, emphasizing the value of her taking the time to connect with the team. She also recognized Staley’s competitive spirit, observing her intently watching and taking notes on both teams, preparing for the upcoming game.

This ability to nurture and inspire while simultaneously preparing for fierce competition is a hallmark of Staley’s coaching philosophy. Southern head coach Carlos Funchess echoed the sentiment of facing a formidable opponent, stating, “When it comes to South Carolina, of course, we just have to go out and compete. Play our game and try to do the best that we can.”

    Uplifting HBCU Programs

Staley’s influence extends far beyond her own team’s success. As an alumna of Cheyney University, she has consistently used her platform to champion HBCU programs. This includes scheduling games against them, like matchups with Norfolk State and Coppin State, and advocating for better seeding and support. Her actions bring much-needed visibility to programs that often operate outside the mainstream spotlight.

The upcoming matchup between South Carolina and Southern University marks their first meeting, adding another layer of significance to an already meaningful encounter. For the Lady Jaguars, it’s an incredible opportunity to represent their program and the broader HBCU community on a national stage. Thanks to Staley’s gesture, they’ll carry with them a powerful reminder of what excellence and support look like at the highest level of the game.

  • Tyler Perry & Marlo Hampton Dating Rumor Debunked

The internet was buzzing recently with a photo showing Tyler Perry and Marlo Hampton in a close embrace, leading many to speculate about a potential romance. However, before the rumor mill could spin too far, official word has come out: the photo was digitally altered, and the two are not dating. Loren Lorosa from ‘The Breakfast Club’ stepped in to clear the air and provide the real story behind the viral image.

    The AI-Generated Photo

While Tyler Perry and Marlo Hampton did attend the Sea Salt SoulFull Sunday Gospel Brunch in Atlanta earlier this month and even posed for pictures together, the steamy kissing photo that circulated online was not real. It turns out the image was artificially generated using AI, a technology that’s becoming increasingly sophisticated and, at times, misleading.

Loren Lorosa confirmed that Perry and Hampton had never met prior to the event. The photographer at the brunch also noted that Tyler Perry was aiming for a low-key presence, not wanting the spotlight to be solely on him. He was there to enjoy the event with his friend Jason Lee.

How They Ended Up at the Same Event

So, how did they end up in the same place? Marlo Hampton was attending the brunch to support her close friend, Catherine Brewton, a BMI executive who hosts the annual event. Tyler Perry was invited by Jason Lee. Their paths crossed at the gathering, leading to some legitimate photos and interactions, but nothing more.

Lorosa clarified, “He’s never met her before… They met; she’s caught in some videos; they’re taking some photos together too, but they are not dating. That is not happening.” The event itself was quite the gathering, featuring a performance by Kirk Franklin and appearances by T.I. and Tameka “Tiny” Harris, making it a star-studded affair.

    Tyler Perry’s Private Love Life

Tyler Perry has always maintained a high level of privacy regarding his personal relationships. For many years, he was linked to filmmaker Gelila Bekele, with whom he shares a son, Aman. Although they separated, Bekele even directed his 2023 documentary, ‘Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story,’ showcasing a unique post-breakup professional collaboration.

Since his split from Bekele, Perry has kept his current dating life under wraps. He did share in a 2020 Instagram post, following his breakup, that he was single and experiencing a ‘mid-life crisis,’ humorously noting his age and status at the time. Whatever his current relationship status may be, it remains a private matter.
