  • Chaka Khan’s Life Story Becomes a Musical

The legendary Chaka Khan is bringing her incredible life story to the stage in a new musical, “I’m Every Woman: The Musical.” At 72 years old, Khan felt it was the right time to share her journey, stating, “I’ve been trying to find a way to tell the history of my life for quite some time… Now I’m 72, I’ve reached a point of feeling, let’s just do it!”

From Chicago’s South Side to Global Stardom

English pop star Alexandra Burke has been cast to portray Chaka Khan in the musical. The production will reportedly chronicle Khan’s life, from her upbringing on Chicago’s South Side to her rise to global fame. Khan mentioned that finding the right actress was challenging, as she was looking for someone “wild enough” to capture her spirit.

According to the musical’s website, the production will delve into her “unwavering passion for civil rights, her defiance in the face of a toxic music industry, the harrowing road through addiction, and the unrelenting pressure of being a working mother.” The narrative is rooted in themes of resilience, purpose, and power, reflecting Khan’s own life experiences.

    Honesty About Struggles and Resilience

Khan shared her experience guiding Burke, telling her, “Free yourself up, baby. Relax, open your mouth and sing. And she did exactly that.” The musical, written by Nia T. Hill, will also honestly explore Khan’s journey with substance abuse. Behind the scenes of her burgeoning music career, she battled addiction to cocaine, heroin, alcohol, and prescription medication.

Despite these struggles, Khan credits her “innate resilience” for helping her navigate those difficult periods. “There were times when I thought, will I make it? Will I live through this?” she recalled. “I went through all this stuff – drugs and the whole nine yards – so I’m just happy that I made it.” Reflecting on her life story for the musical, Khan expressed awe at her own journey, stating, “I see bits and pieces of what I do for a living, and sometimes I don’t believe it’s me. I’m still excited about what I do. It still moves me.”

A Message of Love and Purpose

Khan finds continued motivation in her audience and her purpose. “When you know there are all these people out there waiting to hear you sing, it’s a special thing,” she said. “I find that what I’m doing right now is just that – loving people in a very big way and getting a lot of love back. I know now, this is what I am, this is what God put me here for, and I’m just going to just do it until it’s over.”

“I’m Every Woman: The Musical” is set to premiere at the Hackney Empire in London, UK, on March 20th, promising an inspiring look into the life of the iconic “Queen of Funk.”

  • Ava DuVernay Debuts Boyfriend at Oscars, Reflects on Father’s Anniversary

Ava DuVernay chose Oscar Sunday not only as a night of professional reflection but also of personal revelation. The acclaimed filmmaker, who was nominated for Best Documentary Feature for “Origin,” made a significant public debut by bringing her longtime boyfriend, whom she has kept private for years, to the Vanity Fair Oscars red carpet.

A ‘Hard Launch’ with a Longtime Beau

During a conversation with Essence on the red carpet, DuVernay was asked about what she was most proud of heading into the evening. She responded, “Right now, I am proud of myself for coming to the Oscars with my honey, who I’ve kept hidden for a long time.” She added, “But now he’s here.” While DuVernay did not reveal her boyfriend’s name, observers noted his impeccable style, complementing her flowing blue Louis Vuitton gown with his own sharp look by Ozwald Boateng.

This public acknowledgment marks a significant moment for the couple, who have been linked for nearly three years but have maintained a low profile. DuVernay’s decision to bring her partner to such a high-profile event signals a new chapter in their relationship’s visibility.

Reflecting on Father’s Anniversary and Life’s Journey

The Oscar night held particular significance for DuVernay as it coincided with the tenth anniversary of her father’s passing. She shared her reflections in an Instagram post, juxtaposing the “worst day of my life” in 2016 with what she described as “one of the best days of my life” a decade later. “I’ve been to many Oscars. They are cool events. But on this day, I took my honey with me and it was… different. Felt like opening a new window in the house. A fresh breeze drifted through. I had so much fun because I know my Pop is smiling on me. He worried about me. That I worked too much. That I wouldn’t make time for other parts of life.”

She further reflected on the nature of time and healing: “Time. It is a lot of things. But most profoundly for me, it is a healer. My father’s journey onward was once an open wound. Now, it is a scar. Ever present. But it debilitates me less often. It now serves as a reminder of love. In all its forms.”

Personal Choices and Embracing the Present

In a 2025 interview with Kenya Barris and Malcolm Gladwell for their podcast “The Unusual Suspects,” DuVernay discussed her decision not to marry or have children, citing her childhood experience of being the eldest of five siblings as a primary reason. “I’ve had a lot of small children in my life for a long time, so I never felt like I wanted to have kids,” she explained. Despite her mother’s initial hopes, DuVernay remains firm in her choice, stating, “I don’t feel like I would be a good mother for a child. I don’t want to do that and I think in the most ideal scenario, you should want to do that. I just don’t want to.” While children may not be in her future, love certainly is, and DuVernay appears to be fully embracing this chapter of her life.

  • Corinne Bailey Rae & Ravyn Lenae Launch Mental Health Series

Corinne Bailey Rae and Ravyn Lenae are opening up about the emotional realities of navigating careers in the music industry and the importance of mental wellness. Billboard magazine announced on Monday, March 16th, that therapy platform BetterHelp has partnered with them as their first Official Mental Health Partner, launching a new video series titled “Like Minded.”

A Year-Long Initiative on Music and Mental Wellness

The inaugural episode features the 47-year-old British singer and the 27-year-old R&B star in conversation about their personal mental health journeys. This partnership is set to unfold as a year-long initiative, focusing on the intersection of music and mental wellness. Conversations are strategically timed with major editorial moments and original storytelling throughout 2026.

The series aims to provide a platform for artists to reflect on how the pressures of the industry have evolved across different generations, genres, and stages of fame. The goal is to offer an intimate look at how artists process mental health challenges, fostering understanding and connection.

Insights from SXSW and Expert Guidance

Filmed during the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival on Saturday, March 14th, the conversation between Rae and Lenae was led by BetterHelp’s Vice President of Clinical Quality and Innovation, Dr. Russell DuBois, alongside Billboard moderator Delisa Shannon. The discussion offered valuable insights into managing mental well-being amidst the demands of a music career.

Rae shared advice on seeking support: “If you do have people in your life…whether they’re in the family or whether they’re friends or a professional, I think it’s so useful to be able to let these feelings out in a real healthy way.” Lenae spoke about the unexpected loneliness that can accompany success, admitting, “What you don’t expect is the loneliness of it. I remember being on tour and I remember crying one day in my hotel room and being confused about why I’m crying because everything’s going so well.” She also noted the importance of maintaining connections and pursuing personal interests, even amidst a packed schedule.

    The Spectrum of Artist Life

Lenae mentioned previously seeking therapy but plans to return after a recent break. Rae echoed similar sentiments about the transient nature of fame, advising, “The idea your life is changing and it will never change back. I wish somebody said to me that all these things are for a season. They’ll be a season where you’re the hottest thing on the planet. But guess what? It won’t last forever.” The “Like Minded” series aims to capture the full emotional spectrum of an artist’s life, using music as a lens to explore the human experiences behind the spotlight. The debut episode is expected to premiere across Billboard’s digital platforms later this month.

  • Tuskegee University Launches Nursing Apprenticeship Program

Tuskegee University is breaking new ground by becoming the first historically Black college or university (HBCU) in Alabama to offer a nursing apprenticeship program. This innovative initiative, developed in partnership with Baptist Health System, aims to provide students with invaluable hands-on experience and financial assistance, better preparing them for successful careers in the healthcare sector.

Early Clinical Experience and Financial Support

The Registered Nursing Apprenticeship Program allows students to be paired one-on-one with experienced nurse mentors, enabling them to gain early clinical training while still pursuing their degrees. This approach contrasts with traditional nursing programs by offering practical experience earlier in students’ academic careers, providing exposure to specialty departments, and offering wages during clinical rotations. This model not only enhances clinical readiness but also helps mitigate financial barriers that often hinder students from completing their nursing education.

Baptist Health System is serving as the program’s “last-dollar” scholarship provider, covering any remaining tuition and school-related expenses not met by other financial aid. Meredith Smith, director of the Alabama Office of Apprenticeship, highlighted the program’s innovative approach: “This apprenticeship represents a different way of thinking about how we prepare Alabama’s healthcare workforce.” She noted the program’s combination of structured mentorship, practical experience, and financial support creates a robust pipeline for well-prepared nurses entering Alabama’s healthcare facilities.

    Collaborative Effort and Expanded Reach

The development of this program involved collaboration among several key state entities, including the Alabama Office of Apprenticeship, the Alabama Community College System, the Alabama Board of Nursing, and participating employers. Tuskegee University joins 30 other postsecondary institutions across Alabama that already offer similar apprenticeship opportunities, making it the first four-year HBCU to participate.

For Tuskegee students, this apprenticeship offers a unique blend of education, mentorship, and compensation. It provides early exposure in real-world settings under the guidance of mentors, fostering confidence and competence. This early integration is expected to facilitate a smoother transition into professional nursing roles, addressing both workforce demands and the ongoing nursing shortage in Alabama. Experts believe programs like Tuskegee’s apprenticeship could serve as a model for other HBCUs and four-year institutions nationwide, demonstrating how hands-on experience and financial aid can improve student success rates in healthcare programs.

What are your thoughts on Tuskegee University’s new nursing apprenticeship program? Do you think more universities should adopt similar initiatives? Share your opinions in the comments below!

  • Kevin Hart Demands ‘Redo’ of Viral Wax Figure

Celebrity wax figures are usually celebrated for their uncanny resemblance to the stars they represent. However, a recently unveiled wax figure of comedian Kevin Hart has gone viral for quite the opposite reason, sparking confusion and amusement among fans and the star himself.

    A Figure Far From Identical

The new figure, displayed at the Hollywood Wax Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, has facial features that many observers feel are noticeably different from the award-winning comedian and actor. Despite the signage clearly identifying it as Kevin Hart, the likeness has left many scratching their heads.

Even Kevin Hart himself weighed in on the online discourse. Posting a video of the wax figure on Instagram, he expressed his disbelief and outrage with a series of exclamations: “WTTTTFFFFF …. What did I do to these people…. This is an attack…. Who in the f—k is this?????? At this point, these museums are just trying to make me cry 🥺😂😂😂😂….. Fans Join the Fun with Hilarious Comparisons

Hart’s fans were quick to join the conversation, flooding his comment section with jokes about the figure’s features and complexion, which they felt bore little resemblance to the “Jumanji” star. Comparisons ranged from humorous to outright outlandish.

One user quipped, “You asked for Kevin Hart and got Kevin The Weeknd,” while another added, “That ain’t Kevin Hart, that’s Kevin Corazon.” Some fans even suggested the figure looked more like TV host Jawn Murray than Kevin Hart himself, further fueling the amusement.

    Museum Remains Silent

As of now, the Hollywood Wax Museum has not issued a statement addressing the widespread discourse surrounding Kevin Hart’s wax figure. The comedian’s humorous outrage and the public’s playful reactions continue to make this wax figure a viral sensation for all the wrong reasons.

  • Niecy Nash’s Birthday Trip to Mexico Turned Scary

Niecy Nash recently celebrated her 56th birthday with a belated Michael Jordan-themed bash in Los Angeles, surrounded by friends and family. However, the festivities stood in stark contrast to how she spent her actual birthday, which turned into a frightening ordeal in Mexico.

    Caught in Cartel Violence

On February 25th, just two days after her February 23rd birthday, Nash revealed on Instagram that she and her family were caught in the crosshairs of recent cartel violence in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The incident occurred shortly after the killing of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, on February 22nd.

Nash shared a video featuring herself, her mother, her three children, their friends, and her spouse Jessica Betts, posting it as a “thank you” to everyone who offered support, prayers, well wishes, and assistance in getting them out safely. “FINALLY‼️ Home from Puerto Vallarta 😳Went to celebrate my bday with my family, and got caught up in the cartel attacks,” she wrote. “Challenges for sure showed up BUT GOD! 🙏🏾 Black people are so resilient! One thing for sure, two things for certain We. Will. Keep. Our. JOY!” she added, describing their joy on full display despite the stressful situation at the packed airport.

A ‘Scary’ Experience and Gratitude for Safety

Speaking to People magazine at her birthday party, Nash described the experience as “scary,” particularly because she had other people’s children with her. “It was scary because I let my kids bring their friends,” she explained. “So I had other people’s children. It was scary, but we got out unscathed … thanks to the Most High.”

She emphasized the importance of cherishing life and joy, especially in the face of adversity. Nash’s resilience and gratitude shine through as she reflects on the challenging circumstances, reminding everyone to “take every moment to celebrate joy, celebrate life, all the things.”

  • Educators Teach 33 Hours of Black History

Educators Anita Lewis and Gwendolyn Ebron have undertaken an extraordinary challenge, completing a 33-hour teaching marathon focused on Black history. Their goal was not only to surpass the existing Guinness World Record for the longest history lesson but, more importantly, to reclaim and educate about a history often marginalized or erased.

More Than a Record: Reclaiming History

Ebron stated in a press release, “This is more than a record attempt — it is a reclamation. We are teaching the history that shaped the world, honoring the brilliance, resilience, and global impact of African people across millennia.” Lewis added context to their mission, noting the current climate regarding the teaching of African and African-American history. “In light of the things that have been going on at the state, local, and national levels regarding the marginalization and all but erasure of African and African American history, it dawned on me that my protest has always been through education,” Lewis explained. “While they’re looking to remove our history from the walls, from the museums, from the websites, and things like that, they can’t remove it from our minds.”

The lesson was meticulously planned and executed, spanning 5,000 years of African and African-American history. Lewis, an educator from Texas and a recent doctorate recipient, connected with Ebron, a Philadelphia teacher with deep roots in community-based Black history education. Together, they committed to breaking the previous record of 26 hours and 34 minutes, set in 2018.

Intentional Design for Engagement and Understanding

The duo intentionally structured the learning environment to foster engagement. “Every lesson that we teach, we’ll have an engagement activity designed for students to get into the lesson and to apply it because you hear and you forget. You see, and you remember, but you do, and you understand,” Lewis, who teaches at the University of Houston Clear Lake and is a retired K-12 educator, told ABC Philadelphia.

To meet Guinness World Records’ criteria, they meticulously planned every detail, including certified timekeeping, securing multiple witnesses, ensuring seamless topic transitions, and adhering to strict break rules. While the women are clear that the certificate is secondary to their educational mission, they are awaiting Guinness’s review of their submission.

Focus on Education, Empowerment, and Elevation

Their ultimate goal is to “educate, empower, and elevate.” Lewis shared their approach to reinforcing learning: “As part of our lessons, at the end of each lesson we do an affirmation. I want them to see the brilliance that’s in their DNA so that they can understand that ‘yes, this might be hard, but it’s in my DNA to try a little bit harder. I can do this.’” This focus on instilling confidence and pride is central to their educational philosophy.

  • Black Women Entrepreneurs: Growth Driven by Necessity

Black women are emerging as the fastest-growing demographic of entrepreneurs in the nation. A recent report from Wells Fargo highlights this significant trend, revealing a substantial increase in both the number of Black women-owned businesses and their revenue between 2024 and 2025.

Record Growth Driven by Ambition and Necessity

The Wells Fargo report indicates that Black women-owned employer businesses saw a 13% growth, with revenue increasing by nearly 6%. For businesses without employees, the growth was even more pronounced, with a 13% rise in number and an 8% surge in revenue. This growth significantly outpaces that of female-owned businesses overall, which grew at a rate of 4.4% during the same period.

However, the narrative behind this impressive growth is complex. It’s not solely driven by ambition but also by necessity. The American workforce experienced significant disruption last year due to mass layoffs across various sectors, cuts to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, and the increasing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), all contributing to workforce reductions.

Disproportionate Impact on Black Women in the Workforce

It’s no secret that Black women were among the most affected by these workforce changes. Unemployment rates for Black women climbed from 5.4% to 7.3% by December 2025, largely due to federal job cuts that disproportionately impacted them. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data indicates that over 300,000 Black women lost their jobs, compelling many to seek alternative means of financial support.

Labor economist Valerie Wilson noted the unique severity of this decline for Black women, stating to the New York Times, “You don’t see that same loss with Black men, you don’t see that same loss with other groups of women. It was a sharp and unique decline in employment for Black women.” Rep. Ayana Pressley echoed these concerns in September, calling the situation “discriminate harm” and emphasizing its targeted nature: “None of this is by accident… This is discriminate harm. It is precise and it is targeted.”

What are your thoughts on the rise of Black women entrepreneurs? How can we better support these businesses and address the systemic issues that contribute to job loss? Share your insights in the comments below!

  • Deion Sanders & Karrueche Tran: Relationship Deep Dive

In a serene setting in St. Croix, Deion Sanders and Karrueche Tran shared a candid conversation about the foundations of their relationship in a new vlog released on March 17th. The couple spoke honestly about the genuine support they offer each other, highlighting the intentionality behind their actions day-to-day.

    Mutual Appreciation and Down-to-Earth Values

Sanders praised Tran for her thoughtful approach, stating, “You make certain I’m straight like everything, like, on point. You make sure I got what I need. I got what I want and I’m straight.” He further described her as incredibly sweet and someone who prioritizes the well-being of others, especially her family. Tran reciprocated the sentiment, focusing on Sanders’ core character.

She described him as surprisingly down-to-earth, despite his public persona. What particularly stood out to her was his consistent support for his children. Tran also highlighted Sanders’ appreciation for simple pleasures, noting, “You like your house, you like the water, you like your lake, you like fishing. You don’t value materialistic things.” This balance, she emphasized, is a significant part of his appeal.

    Enduring Challenges Together

Their bond wasn’t forged overnight; it has developed through shared experiences and challenges. Tran revealed that she remained a steadfast presence for Sanders during serious health issues, including his bladder cancer diagnosis and neobladder surgery, and while he dealt with blood clots. She stayed by his side even when he told her she could walk away.

In a video uploaded last month to Sanders’ Instagram, Tran shared that he had given her an “out” regarding their relationship during his recovery, an option she ultimately chose not to take. “If I [had] dipped, I would’ve taken the easy way out,” Tran said. “It was hard, it was difficult mentally. … But we made it work.” This shared resilience highlights the strength of their connection.

  • Ciara Promotes HIV Prevention with ‘1, 2 PrEP’ Campaign

Ciara believes that “music, money, medicine” are three powerful forces in the world. She’s now harnessing the healing power of music through her latest collaboration with Gilead, aiming to raise awareness about HIV prevention. The Grammy Award-winning artist has lent her voice to the national “One2PrEP” campaign, reimagining her 2004 hit song “1, 2, Step” to support the cause.

Reimagining ‘1, 2 Step’ for HIV Prevention Awareness

The updated version of the classic song promotes Yeztugo, a groundbreaking twice-yearly pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) injection. Ciara shared her passion for using music as a tool for education and connection: “The power of music, and being able to be creative and able to bring the world together in this case, and educate people on things that they may not know, that’s the beauty of moments and the power of music because it allows me to be able to raise the awareness of something so significant that can be life changing for people.”

During SXSW, Ciara joined HIV advocate Dr. Leo Moore and media personality Loren LoRosa for a panel discussion presented by Gilead Sciences. The conversation focused on amplifying HIV prevention messages through pop culture and music, highlighting the intersection of medicine, culture, and media.

Addressing PrEP Awareness and Accessibility Gaps

Dr. Moore, who also serves on the United States Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA), pointed out key barriers to PrEP utilization: awareness, education, and access. He emphasized that PrEP is not exclusively for gay individuals, stating, “PrEP is not solely for gay people… many heterosexual men and women who can benefit from prep that aren’t considering it because they think it’s solely for the LGBTQ plus community.” The CDC recommends that all HIV-negative adults and adolescents consider PrEP.

Despite PrEP’s effectiveness, its utilization remains low. While approximately 600,000 people in the U.S. use some form of PrEP, the CDC estimates up to 2.2 million could benefit. The disparity is particularly stark in Black communities, which account for 38% of HIV cases but only 14% of PrEP users. Dr. Moore highlighted the need for better awareness and education to bridge this gap.

Reframing Sexual Health as Overall Wellness

Both Ciara and Dr. Moore stress that the conversation extends beyond specific medications like Yeztugo. Their core mission is to reframe how people perceive sexual health, integrating it into overall wellness. “I would love for folks to think about sexual health as a part of their overall health and wellness. That it is not separate from your blood pressure checks, your glucose checks, your blood sugar checks, etc. Think about this as one component of that overall health and wellness journey,” Moore explained.

Ciara concluded by emphasizing the importance of education and making healthcare “cool.” “I want for my people, and beyond to understand that there are ways to protect yourselves when you’re out there and you’re curious and you’re dating and you’re, you know, once to take things to new levels physically, you need to know that there are ways to protect yourself on that journey…, let’s have conversations. let’s take away the stigmas or the funkiness of these types of conversations.”

What are your thoughts on Ciara’s involvement in the ‘One2PrEP’ campaign? How can we better promote sexual health awareness and reduce stigma? Share your opinions in the comments below!
