Longtime political adversary U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters has bestowed a new, festive-themed title upon former President Donald Trump: “The Grinch who stole Christmas.” Waters, a prominent Democratic voice and the ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee, argues that Trump’s economic policies are severely impacting American households, making the holiday season a source of financial anxiety rather than joy.
Economy Squeezing Families, Waters Claims
During a recent House Financial Services Committee hearing, Waters shared feedback from her constituents, noting a significant increase in the cost of everyday necessities. “During the Thanksgiving break, a lot of us heard the same thing from our constituents: buying the groceries for Thanksgiving dinner was much, much more expensive this year,” Waters stated. She elaborated that Trump’s “weakening economy is squeezing families so much that many are concerned that they will need to pull back on holiday spending.”
Waters criticized the Trump administration’s approach, contrasting it with promises of lower costs made early in his term. “We were all promised lowered costs on day one of Trump’s term. Instead, his Administration is dismantling the very institutions that keep costs low and the economy stable,” she asserted, pointing to actions like undermining the Federal Reserve’s independence and forcing agencies to serve personal interests.
Impact on Businesses and Black Communities
Democrats have been leveraging the issue of affordability, especially after recent general elections saw significant victories for the party, partly attributed to voter concerns over inflation. Waters specifically highlighted the detrimental effect of Trump’s tariffs on foreign imports, which have driven up the cost of goods, leading to layoffs and business closures. A report by the Center for American Progress indicates that Black businesses and workers have been disproportionately affected by these economic policies.
“The cost of living has become unbearably high, corporate interests are prioritized over the needs of the working-class, small businesses are hurting and the American Dream is slipping out of reach,” Waters declared. She also noted that criticism of Trump’s economic handling isn’t limited to Democrats, citing Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene as someone who has acknowledged the issues.
Undermining Financial Institutions and Family Enrichment
Waters further criticized the Trump administration’s actions regarding financial regulation, specifically mentioning the closure of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), which she described as the sole federal agency dedicated to ensuring fair treatment by big banks. She expressed concern that banking regulators have prioritized Trump’s deregulatory agenda, potentially leaving the banking system vulnerable to failures similar to, or worse than, the Silicon Valley Bank collapse.
Adding another layer to her critique, Waters pointed out that the Trump family has reportedly amassed billions since his return to office, while ordinary Americans continue to struggle. “The Trump family has spent more time putting money into their own pockets than working for the American people,” she stated, referencing nearly $2 billion in reported profits for the family while regulators work on crypto rules that could legitimize such practices.
