Jeffries: No GOP Support After Trump-Pardoned Rioter Threat

In the charged political climate of Washington D.C., a disturbing incident has highlighted a stark divide. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries recently revealed that not a single Republican leader, either in Congress or from the White House, has reached out to him following a death threat he received from an individual pardoned by former President Donald Trump.

Jeffries, a prominent Democrat, stated directly to reporters, “Not a single Republican has reached out either from the House, the Senate, or the White House, in connection with the death threat and the arrest.” He added that this lack of response, while disappointing, doesn’t surprise him given the current political environment.

The Threat and the Pardon

The individual in question, Christopher Moynihan, was arrested by New York State Police after sending text messages indicating his intent to “eliminate” Congressman Jeffries. Moynihan faces a felony charge for making a terroristic threat. What makes this situation particularly alarming is that Moynihan was among the more than 1,500 individuals pardoned by President Trump on his first day in office.

These pardons were granted to individuals involved in the January 6th, 2021, Capitol riot, an event aimed at disrupting the certification of the 2020 presidential election results. Jeffries pointedly criticized this action, stating, “[Republicans] can’t justify the fact that Donald Trump pardoned hundreds of violent felons on his first day in office. People who brutally beat police officers, including seriously injuring, on these Capitol steps.”

Reoffending and Endangering Communities

Jeffries further elaborated on the consequences of these pardons, suggesting that Trump “pardons these violent felons and then unleashes them on American communities all across the country, and many of them have reoffended.” He noted that instead of pushing back against Trump’s actions, his Republican colleagues have consistently supported such “extreme action.” He believes this puts the safety and well-being of Americans at risk.

Indeed, reports indicate that several Jan. 6 rioters who received pardons have since been arrested for other offenses. These include charges like breaking and entering, and in one tragic case, a rioter was fatally shot after confronting a police officer with a firearm during a traffic stop.

A Call for Accountability

The lack of outreach from Republican leadership following a direct threat to a member of Congress, especially one linked to a presidential pardon of individuals involved in an attack on democracy, raises serious questions about accountability and the state of bipartisan relations. Jeffries’ statement underscores the deep chasm that exists, particularly concerning the events of January 6th and the subsequent actions taken by the Trump administration.

  • Hakeem Jeffries received a death threat from a Jan. 6 rioter.
  • The individual who made the threat had been pardoned by Donald Trump.
  • No Republican leaders from Congress or the White House have reached out to Jeffries.
  • Jeffries criticizes Trump’s pardons of violent felons.
  • Several pardoned Jan. 6 rioters have reportedly reoffended.
