In a recent Cabinet meeting, former President Donald Trump didn’t hold back when discussing his political rivals, particularly former President Barack Obama. Trump declared that Obama, the nation’s first Black president, was “not a smart man” and is “highly overrated.” This strong statement came as Trump boasted about his own cognitive abilities and his performance on a cognitive assessment.
Boasting Cognitive Strength
The 79-year-old former president, whose health has been a topic of discussion, challenged other political figures to take a cognitive test. Trump claimed he has taken the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) – a test used to screen for cognitive impairment and early Alzheimer’s – three times and achieved a perfect score of 30/30. His White House physicians reportedly confirmed these perfect scores.
Trump emphasized his desire for a “smart person” in the presidency, contrasting himself with figures he deemed less capable. He specifically targeted California Governor Gavin Newsom, calling him “very stupid” and suggesting dyslexia would keep him out of the running for the White House. He also stated that current President Joe Biden “had no clue what was happening.”
Scorn for Democratic Figures
Trump’s remarks about Obama have intensified in recent weeks, particularly since the U.S. military began strikes in Iran. He asserted that Obama “wasn’t a smart man either” and was a “great divider,” stating the country cannot endure further division. This ongoing criticism highlights a persistent competitive dynamic between the two former leaders.
Reactions and Political Commentary
In response to Trump’s personal attacks, former Biden White House official Yemisi Egbewole questioned who Trump considers intelligent if he deems all his opponents unintelligent. She pointed out the high gas prices under the current administration, contrasting them with the Obama era. “If he’s the smart one, then maybe he can figure out how to get gas prices down,” Egbewole told TheGrio.
Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross noted that Trump has consistently attacked Obama’s legacy, suggesting it stems from Obama’s enduring appeal. Cross believes Trump’s entry into politics was fueled by a desire to diminish the legacy of the first Black president.
