In a significant move within the House of Representatives, U.S. Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pa.) has introduced articles of impeachment against Attorney General Pam Bondi. This action stems from ongoing concerns about the Justice Department’s handling of the FBI files related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and allegations of political influence within the department.
Allegations of Misconduct and Defiance
The resolution, filed on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, accuses Attorney General Bondi of “high crimes and misdemeanors.” Key among these accusations are defying a subpoena from the House Oversight Committee for the full Epstein files and the Epstein Files Transparency Act. The articles also cite alleged abuse of investigatory and prosecutorial authority, defiance of federal court orders, and perjury during congressional testimony.
Rep. Lee stated, “The Attorney General of the United States is entrusted with one of the most solemn responsibilities in our democracy: to enforce the law fairly, impartially, and without political influence. Instead, Pam Bondi is breaking the law to protect pedophiles and prosecute Trump’s political opponents.” She emphasized that the goal is “accountability, transparency, and justice,” asserting that the public deserves a justice system that serves the people, not one “weaponized for political gain.”
Politicization of the Justice Department
The articles of impeachment specifically allege that Bondi has politicized the Department of Justice on behalf of President Trump. This includes accusations of firing public servants within the DOJ and FBI, ordering politically motivated investigations into perceived opponents of the Trump administration, and dismissing cases involving Trump and his allies. Furthermore, the resolution points to the targeting of journalists and protestors.
Regarding the Epstein files, the resolution highlights the DOJ’s refusal to comply with the subpoena and its withholding of substantial evidence. It notes that evidence logs indicate withheld documents include FBI interviews with a survivor who accused Donald Trump of sexual abuse. The impeachment articles claim Pamela Bondi “knowingly and intentionally abused the power of her office to shield individuals named in the Epstein files… from accountability and oversight by Congress.”
Co-Sponsors and Ongoing Investigations
Rep. Lee’s impeachment articles have garnered support from several co-sponsors, including Reps. Yassamin Ansari, Valerie Foushee, Dave Min, Rashida Tlaib, and Maxine Dexter. This bipartisan effort underscores the gravity of the accusations.
Ironically, Attorney General Bondi herself has been subpoenaed by Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R) to testify before Congress on April 14 regarding the DOJ’s handling of the Epstein investigation. Bondi’s office has dismissed the subpoena as “completely unnecessary,” while a Justice Department spokesperson stated that lawmakers are invited to view the unredacted files at the DOJ and that the Attorney General has always been available to speak with members of Congress. Chairman Comer, however, believes Bondi possesses “valuable insight” into the perceived delays and mishandling of the Epstein file release.
