Pritzker’s Endorsement May Cost Black Voter Support

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, a Democrat with a considerable net worth, is facing backlash from Black lawmakers over his substantial financial support for his lieutenant governor’s Senate campaign. This move, seen by some as ‘tipping the scales’ in a primary race, could potentially jeopardize his standing with Black voters should he consider a presidential run in 2028.

Endorsement Sparks Controversy

The controversy stems from Pritzker’s endorsement and $5 million donation to boost Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton’s campaign against U.S. Representatives Robin Kelly and Raja Krishnamoorthi in the Illinois Senate Democratic primary. Kelly, a member of the influential Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), was ultimately defeated by Stratton.

CBC Chairwoman Rep. Yvette D. Clarke publicly criticized Pritzker’s involvement prior to the primary, accusing him of unfairly influencing the race. Members of the CBC are reportedly still upset by the election results, viewing Pritzker’s actions as undermining one of their own.

Implications for a Potential 2028 Run

With Pritzker rumored to be considering a presidential bid in 2028, his role in defeating a CBC member has raised concerns. U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi suggested that Pritzker would need to provide a strong justification for his actions if he decides to run. Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio emphasized the CBC’s strategic importance, noting that any prevailing Democratic presidential candidate must navigate the caucus’s endorsement process.

While Pritzker and Rep. Kelly had a past dispute, it was reportedly resolved. However, the current issue lies with Pritzker’s actions in the primary, not with Stratton herself. Many CBC members believe Pritzker will need to make amends to secure their support.

Stratton’s Perspective and Future Role

Lt. Governor Stratton expressed pride in Pritzker’s support, acknowledging the CBC’s public pushback but stating her eagerness to join the caucus upon her election. She highlighted the work she and Governor Pritzker have accomplished together over seven years, focusing on uplifting families across Illinois through initiatives like raising the minimum wage, passing gun safety legislation, protecting reproductive freedom, and creating jobs.

Stratton affirmed her agreement with the CBC’s mission to elect Black candidates and grow the caucus, expressing anticipation for joining them in January 2027 if elected to the Senate. Her potential future role within the CBC adds another layer to the political dynamics surrounding Pritzker’s actions.
