Well, well, well, Donald Trump is back in the spotlight, this time on CBS’s ’60 Minutes’! The interview, which aired on Sunday, November 2nd, comes almost exactly one year after Trump sued the network over its handling of a Kamala Harris segment. While the broadcast version was trimmed for time, CBS released an extended cut online, giving us a fuller picture of the 90-minute conversation filmed at Mar-a-Lago.
Breaking the Fourth Wall at Mar-a-Lago
Throughout the extensive interview, Trump seemed to be directing the proceedings, frequently commenting on how the footage should be edited. He even told producers, “You don’t have to use that one,” after a particularly awkward exchange about crime in Washington, D.C., and later added, “You don’t have to put this on, because I don’t wanna embarrass you.”
Journalist Norah O’Donnell didn’t shy away from pressing Trump on critical issues. She tackled tough questions about potential military action against Venezuela, the timeline for declaring “mission accomplished” on immigration, and the possibility of sending the military into American cities.
ICE Raids and Shifting Blame
The interview produced several moments that quickly went viral. Trump doubled down on his stance regarding immigration raids, stating they “haven’t gone far enough.” When asked about Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, whom he recently pardoned, Trump claimed, “I don’t know who he is.”
On the topic of rising costs for working families, Trump pointed the finger squarely at President Joe Biden. He promised to address gas prices and healthcare, but O’Donnell pushed back, reminding him that he’d been discussing fixing healthcare plans since 2015.
Praise for CBS and Misstated Lawsuit Details
Interestingly, Trump offered praise for CBS’s new ownership, calling it “one of the best things to happen” to the press. However, he repeated several claims about his previous lawsuit against the network that were not entirely accurate. He asserted that ’60 Minutes’ was “forced to pay me a lot of money,” when in reality, CBS reached a private settlement without admitting any fault. Legal experts suggested the network likely would have won in court.
Trump also misstated the timing of the Kamala Harris interview, claiming it aired “two nights before the election,” when it actually ran a month prior. O’Donnell addressed the controversy in her on-air introduction, clarifying that the settlement “did not include an apology or admission of wrongdoing.”
