  • Protecting Black Girls: Holidays & Beyond

As the holiday season approaches, many of us look forward to joy, family, and festive gatherings. However, for Black women, this time of year can unfortunately bring heightened risks, particularly for those experiencing intimate partner violence. Financial stress, emotional triggers, and isolation can create dangerous situations. This is precisely why Ujima: The National Center on Violence Against Women in the Black Community exists – to ensure Black women and girls are seen, heard, and protected.

    Ujima: Collective Work and Responsibility

Founded by a dedicated group of advocates aiming to bridge the gap in culturally specific services, Ujima’s work is deeply connected to its name. ‘Ujima’ is a Swahili word meaning ‘collective work and responsibility,’ a Kwanzaa principle that perfectly embodies the organization’s mission: to mobilize the community to end gender-based violence against Black women and girls.

Karma Cottman, Ujima’s founder, emphasizes the need for community-wide involvement. ‘It’s going to take our entire community,’ she states with calm urgency. ‘We need men and women working together to address domestic violence. If women are overwhelmingly the victims, then men must be part of ending it. It impacts all of us—our children, our families, our future.’

A Vision Born From Lived Experience

Before establishing Ujima, Cottman and her co-founders witnessed a recurring pattern in national and international gender-based violence programs: decisions were made *about* Black women, not *with* them. ‘We sat in rooms where no one looked like us, even though the policies being created disproportionately impacted us,’ Cottman explains. Recognizing that Black women are two and a half times more likely to be murdered by an intimate partner, they knew there was a critical need for research, advocacy, and programs that truly reflect Black women’s lived experiences and healing journeys.

    Holistic Protection: Beyond Physical Safety

Ujima’s concept of safety extends far beyond physical security. Cottman defines protection as holistic, encompassing physical, emotional, financial, and spiritual well-being. For Black women, true protection means having autonomy over their finances, mental health, and spiritual lives, and feeling safe to seek support without blame.

This shift from crisis response to comprehensive wellness influences Ujima’s policy advocacy and community healing programs. Initiatives like ‘Healing the Healers’ provide survivors and advocates with spaces to rest and recharge, challenging the harmful ‘strong Black woman’ trope that often leads to the erasure of vulnerability. Cottman stresses, ‘It’s okay to prioritize yourself. It’s okay to ask for help.’

Navigating Unsafe Homes and Holiday Pressures

Cottman advises listening without judgment when someone discloses abuse, emphasizing that the most dangerous time for a survivor is often during separation. During the holidays, Ujima experiences an increase in calls due to factors like extended time at home, limited escape routes, financial pressures, and complex family dynamics. The pressure to ‘keep the peace’ can unfortunately silence critical needs.

    • **Know the Warning Signs:** Look out for isolation, financial control, excessive monitoring, or emotional manipulation.
    • **Check on Your Strong Friends:** Those who appear to have it all together might be silently struggling.
    • **Understand Safety Planning:** Help survivors identify safe places to go, people to call, and ways to exit safely.

Rewriting the Narrative: Language and Wellness as Resistance

Cottman highlights the power of language, noting how terms like ‘angry’ or ‘strong’ can harm Black women by teaching the world they don’t deserve softness. Black girls, she points out, are often adultified from a young age. Ujima works to change this narrative through education and advocacy, ensuring Black women are seen as storytellers and leaders, not just statistics. They also aim to model healthy relationships, as many young people lack positive examples in their immediate environment.

For Black women, wellness has often been viewed as a luxury, but Ujima reframes it as a revolutionary act of survival. Through programs like ‘Healing the Healers’ and ‘Connected & Protected,’ they create spaces for Black women to reclaim their wholeness, emphasizing that emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being is revolutionary. Cottman’s advice for prioritizing wellness includes making yourself a priority, saying no, reconnecting after isolation, and trusting your intuition.

    Building a Future of Support

In the face of challenges to culturally specific services, Ujima’s mission is both personal and political. Their ‘Power of 10’ initiative encourages supporters to form small giving circles to fund safety programs nationwide. Cottman concludes, ‘Our work only happens in community and in sisterhood. That’s how we heal. That’s how we protect each other.’

  • Mielle Partners with the NFL

This is huge news for textured hair care and sports fans alike! Mielle, the beloved Black-founded and woman-led haircare brand, has just inked a groundbreaking partnership with the National Football League (NFL). This marks the first time the NFL has officially partnered with a textured-hair care brand, celebrating the significant role women play in the league’s culture.

    Celebrating a ‘Culture-Driving Force’

According to Mielle executives, women now make up half of the NFL fanbase, creating a powerful “culture-driving force” between the league and the brand. Tracie Rodburg, SVP of Global Partnerships for the NFL, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating that Mielle’s commitment to performance, community, and empowerment aligns perfectly with the NFL’s mission to build lasting connections and celebrate self-expression.

This partnership is more than just a sponsorship; it’s a statement. Mielle President Omar Goff highlighted its significance, saying, “This partnership reinforces that textured hair isn’t a niche, it’s central to the culture, the preparation, and the game-day experience.” Together, they aim to expand access and create new possibilities for textured hair fans worldwide.

    Mielle’s Impact and Reach

Founded in 2014 by CEO Monique Rodriguez, Mielle has rapidly grown into a global beauty powerhouse, known for its focus on healthier ingredients and a “root to results” philosophy. Acquired by Procter & Gamble (P&G) in January 2023, it continues to operate as an independent subsidiary. Mielle’s products are designed for all hair types and are available in over 100,000 stores nationwide.

For athletes with textured hair, this partnership is particularly relevant. Many face challenges like dryness, breakage, and frizz due to sweat and friction from helmets. Mielle’s high-performing ingredients are designed to protect curls and coils, offering a much-needed solution for players on and off the field.

    A Social-First Campaign

To celebrate this new alliance, Mielle and the NFL have launched a social-first campaign. • Jeffrey Banks: Fashion Icon’s New Chapter

Get ready to hear from a true legend! American menswear designer Jeffrey Banks, a name synonymous with polished tailoring and American sportswear, is finally stepping into the spotlight to share his incredible journey. At 72, he’s not just reflecting on his past but embarking on an exciting new chapter, marked by a celebrated museum exhibit, a new memoir, and the relaunch of his iconic label.

A Career Spanning Decades and Defining Style

With over 50 years in the fashion industry, Jeffrey Banks has seen and shaped it all. From his early days working with giants like Ralph Lauren to launching his own groundbreaking label in 1976 at just 21, his influence is undeniable. His original designs, known for their vibrant play with color and texture – think bold tartan plaid jackets and sharp pinstriped suits – made waves at a time when Black designers were scarce in major department stores like Macy’s and Bergdorf Goodman.

Now, as he prepares to relaunch his eponymous menswear label in January 2026, Banks is pivoting. While he cherishes his history with suits, he’s embracing sustainable sportswear, from cozy knits to essential underwear. He wisely notes that the business landscape has shifted, and he’s adapting to what the market and younger generations are looking for.

Sharing His Story: The Memoir and Museum Recognition

Before penning his own story, Banks co-authored seven books on fashion. But his new memoir, “Storyteller: Tales from a Fashion Insider,” is a deeply personal account of his life and career. It’s a love letter to the family, friends, and industry peers who supported him, including his mother, who turns 105 in January and inspired his passion for clothing from a young age.

This year has been particularly special, with one of his designs being honored in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” exhibit. This recognition underscores his lasting impact on fashion and his role in shaping Black style narratives. It’s a testament to a career built on talent, hard work, and a vision that defied limitations.

    Mentors, Friends, and Fashion Icons

Banks credits fashion titans like Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein as pivotal mentors. He shares heartwarming anecdotes about Lauren, who treated him like family from day one, even lending him a suit for his prom. His time at Calvin Klein, where he was personally recruited, was instrumental in building his expertise before he ventured out on his own.

She instilled in me and in my sister, as did my father, the idea that if we wanted something bad enough and we were willing to work hard enough for it, we could achieve and get anything that we wanted. And the fact that we were Black, that shouldn’t make a difference. — Jeffrey Banks

His memoir also shines a light on his friendships with fashion stalwarts and celebrities, including the late Perry Ellis, Bobby Short, Barbra Streisand, and Audrey Hepburn, painting a vivid picture of the glamorous world he inhabited. Even with his close ties to industry giants, Banks remains a gentleman, sharing entertaining stories without divulging all his insider secrets.

A Respected Voice, Ready for What’s Next

Industry friends and colleagues are rallying around Banks, celebrating his book tour and his enduring relevance. Isaac Mizrahi, who once worked for Banks, called him a trendsetter and one of the first to successfully juggle multiple ventures. Fern Mallis, former head of the CFDA, emphasizes that Banks is still incredibly relevant and has a dedicated following ready to embrace his new collections.

From revolutionizing the Merona Sport brand, turning a $7 million business into a $70 million juggernaut in just six months, to now returning to his roots with a focus on sustainable sportswear, Jeffrey Banks continues to inspire. His journey is a powerful reminder that passion, hard work, and a unique vision can lead to a lasting legacy in the ever-evolving world of fashion.

Oluwamodupe “Dupe” Oloyede has officially been named the head drum major of the legendary Marching 100 band, a first for the university.

    A Dream Fulfilled

The Director of Bands, Shelby Chipman, expressed immense pride in the appointment. He described Oloyede as a “model student” and an “ideal choice,” highlighting her consistent leadership, musical talent, and integrity within the band.

    Paving the Way

Oloyede’s full name, meaning “Lord I thank you,” feels fitting for this moment, as she sees it as walking in her purpose. Before this historic appointment, she was already a trailblazer, serving as the second woman ever to hold a drum major position in the Marching 100, following Cori Bostic in 2018.

Bostic, who paved the way for women in the role, shared her joy, calling Oloyede’s appointment “the very thing I prayed for.” She noted how Oloyede’s seamless transition into leadership, without having to prove herself as much, represents a significant shift and a dream realized for future generations of young Black women.

  • Thanksgiving Store Hours: Who’s Open, Who’s Closed?

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and if you’re like many, you might find yourself needing a last-minute ingredient or perhaps a forgotten gift. But before you head out on Thursday, November 27th, it’s crucial to know which stores will be open and which will be closed, allowing their employees to enjoy the holiday with loved ones.

    Major Retailers Closed on Thanksgiving

For those planning to shop on Thanksgiving Day itself, you’ll find that most major national retailers are keeping their doors shut. This includes giants like Walmart and Target, both of which will be closed on Thursday. Best Buy and Macy’s are also following suit, giving their staff a well-deserved break.

Even popular department stores like JCPenney and Nordstrom will be closed on Thanksgiving. While some of these stores will reopen bright and early for Black Friday sales on November 28th, you’ll need to check specific times, as they can vary by location. Sephora’s hours also differ, so a quick check on their store locator is recommended.

    Grocery Stores with Thanksgiving Hours

If your Thanksgiving meal prep requires a grocery run on the holiday itself, you’ll have a few options, though with some limitations. Most Kroger locations plan to be open but will close early at 4 p.m. local time, and their pharmacies will be closed. Food Lion stores will also be open, but closing times may vary, and their pharmacies will be shut.

Wegmans is another option, with stores open on Thanksgiving but closing at 4 p.m. Whole Foods Market will be open with reduced hours from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in most locations, though stores in Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island will be closed entirely for the holiday. It’s always a good idea to call your local store to confirm their specific holiday hours.

    Stores Closed on Thanksgiving

    • Walmart
    • Target
    • Best Buy
    • Macy’s
    • JCPenney
    • Nordstrom
    • Aldi
    • Trader Joe’s

Stores Open (with limited hours) on Thanksgiving

    • Kroger (most locations, closing early)
    • Food Lion (closing times vary)
    • Wegmans (closing at 4 p.m.)
    • Whole Foods (limited hours, some locations closed)

Remember, the goal of Thanksgiving is to spend time with loved ones. While Black Friday deals await on November 28th, prioritizing family and relaxation on Thursday is key. Always double-check with your local store for the most accurate holiday hours before you make a special trip.

  • Meghan Markle Denies ‘DressGate’ Accusations

The holiday season is usually filled with festive cheer, but a peculiar online rumor has surfaced just as Meghan Markle prepares to release her new Netflix special, “With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration.” Dubbed ‘DressGate,’ the online chatter suggests the Duchess of Sussex might have ‘stolen’ a nearly $1,700 Galvan gown she wore for a 2022 Variety photoshoot.

The speculation gained traction after Meghan appeared in the promo for her holiday special wearing the same satin, emerald-green, side-twist halterneck gown. Some internet corners, fueled by anonymous ‘sources’ cited by outlets like Page Six, claimed she kept the dress without permission, perhaps for a ‘royal archive,’ or that royals are obligated to keep all looks.

    Spokesperson Denies Allegations

However, Meghan Markle’s official spokesperson has firmly shut down these rumors. On Tuesday, November 25th, the spokesperson told People magazine, “The insinuation that any items were taken without the full knowledge and agreement of the on-set stylists or their respective teams is not only categorically false, but also highly defamatory. Any items kept were done so in total transparency and in accordance with contractual arrangements.”

This statement clarifies that any decision to keep the dress was made transparently and with the full consent of the styling teams involved, adhering to contractual agreements. It seems the ‘DressGate’ saga is officially put to rest, highlighting the often-unnecessary scrutiny celebrities face regarding their wardrobe choices.

A Glimpse into ‘With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration’

Beyond the dress drama, the holiday special invites viewers into the Sussexes’ Montecito home for a cozy and festive hour. The program features cooking, decorating, handmade gifts, and a heartwarming moment where Meghan and Prince Harry share a rare on-camera kiss while moving around the kitchen together, adding a touch of holiday romance.

This intimate tone aligns with Meghan’s recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, where she discussed how fame has shaped her relationship with Prince Harry. She spoke about developing stronger boundaries and finding ways to protect herself, emphasizing Harry’s unwavering support and unique perspective. “No one in the world loves me more than him, so I know he’s always going to make sure that he has my back,” she shared.

    Playfulness and Business

Meghan also reflected on Prince Harry’s ‘childlike wonder and playfulness,’ qualities that drew her to him and have translated into all aspects of their life, including their business ventures. She expressed a desire for them to “play and have fun and explore and be creative” together.

“With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration” is set to premiere on Netflix on December 3rd, offering a peek into the Sussexes’ festive traditions and their enduring connection.

  • Black Gen Z Daters Seek Depth Over Drama

Are you tired of the dating games and unclear intentions? You’re not alone! Black Gen Z singles are apparently over the drama and clout-chasing, and they’re redefining modern love in 2026. According to the latest report from BLK, the popular dating app for Black singles, this generation is choosing depth, values, and real accountability over ambiguity.

A survey of over 4,000 BLK users reveals a significant shift. Instead of endless ‘situationships,’ Black Gen Z daters are making intentional choices, focusing on what truly matters in a partner. They’re looking for clear signals, shared values, and genuine accountability, blending online introductions with real-world validation.

    Prequalifying and Community Connections

One of the biggest trends is ‘Prequalifying.’ Nearly half of singles (47.7%) are bringing up essential topics like faith, politics, financial habits, and family plans within the first few conversations. By the time they get to the first few dates, a whopping 86% have discussed these crucial non-negotiables. This proactive approach helps ensure compatibility from the start.

The report also highlights the rise of ‘Community Cuffing.’ This trend sees 40% of users meeting potential partners in real-world settings like church, brunch meetups, running clubs, or creative collectives. Having mutual connections adds a layer of trust and character vouching that online profiles alone can’t provide.

    Faith, Boundaries, and Emotional ROI

‘Faith-Fishing’ is another significant trend, with 56.4% of users prioritizing a partner who actively practices their faith, seeing it as a sign of discipline and emotional readiness. In response to the frustrating phenomenon of ‘Ghostlighting’ (where someone disappears and then reappears acting as if nothing happened), firm boundaries and accountability are becoming the new standard.

Interestingly, 71% of users are open to giving a ‘ghost’ a second chance if they demonstrate genuine growth and provide ‘receipts’ (proof) of their change. This focus on emotional investment is further seen in ‘ROEmancing,’ where 81.9% of users regularly assess their emotional return on investment, valuing clarity, support, and consistency over stress and guesswork.

Intentionality in Digital and Real Life

Even digital interactions are becoming more intentional. Over 55% are influenced to connect based on shared music tastes, content creators, or online communities – a trend dubbed ‘Algorithmic Attraction.’ And before the first date, 56.9% engage in ‘Moodboarding,’ checking visual cues like style, living space, and routines to gauge lifestyle compatibility.

‘Ballot Bonding’ also shows that political engagement is a romantic factor for over 41% of singles, who consider civic participation and issue alignment when making dating decisions. Ultimately, for Black Gen Z, dating in 2026 is less about superficial likes and more about deep-seated values, genuine effort, and emotional intelligence.

The co-parenting agreement, reached last month, saw both Bailey and DDG drop previous filings against each other. This resolution has brought a sense of relief, allowing Bailey to focus on the positive aspects of her life, especially her son.
