  • Grambling Alum Nicholas Love Inspires Change

Imagine getting a second chance at your dreams. That’s exactly what Grambling State University offered Nicholas Love, a Michigan native who arrived with a less-than-stellar GPA but a heart full of potential. Now, Love is paying it forward, creating a vital space where industry leaders and aspiring change-makers can connect and grow.

    A Serendipitous Path to Grambling

Love’s journey to Grambling State University was almost fated. After graduating high school with a 2.17 GPA, he found himself drawn to the HBCU through a series of coincidences. A magazine featuring Grambling and ESPN—which would later become his first employer—caught his eye. Later, a BET segment spotlighted the university again. “It was just a lot of synergy for me,” Love shared.

Grambling truly opened doors for Love. His involvement with the university’s band led to a scholarship, a memorable appearance on “Jeopardy!,” and a six-month internship with NBC Sports. After interning with ESPN in 2006, he secured a full-time role, solidifying his career path. “Grambling for me represented a second chance,” he expressed, feeling forever indebted to the institution where he earned his mass communications degree in 2006, becoming a first-generation college graduate.

    Merging Industry Expertise with Academia

As Love’s career flourished, he remained committed to giving back. He climbed the ranks at G&S Business Communications, moving from Director of Social Media to VP of Digital Marketing, where he built a digital center of excellence and served on the diversity task force. He even negotiated a potential $250,000 donation and pro bono marketing services for Grambling, though the deal didn’t materialize after he moved to Hotwire as VP of Global Marketing.

His dedication didn’t go unnoticed. In 2022, Grambling’s mass communications department offered him an adjunct faculty position. That same year, he joined The Kulur Group, eventually becoming CEO. In the classroom, Love focused on merging real-world industry experience with academic learning. He guided students in reporting, podcast creation, and commercial development, significantly boosting their portfolios and career readiness.

In 2024, the College of Business at Grambling invited him to teach principles of advertising, international marketing, and marketing management. He leveraged his network to offer students free certifications and brought in his team members to lecture on emerging topics like AI. “Those type of learnings typically aren’t happening at HBCUs, and if they are, it’s only at a select few,” Love noted, emphasizing his goal to make students highly competitive upon graduation.

Launching the ‘Dope Thinkers Only Conference’

Building on his passion for connection and growth, Love is launching the inaugural “Dope Thinkers Only Conference” at Grambling State University from September 11-12. This event aims to engage the next generation of change-makers, offering tracks in marketing, communications, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Notable speakers include Luke Cooper, Kris Wright (VP of Jordan Brand Footwear), and Tina Davis (President of EMPIRE and a Grambling alumna).

Love envisions the conference expanding to three other HBCU campuses and eventually reaching Ghana. His ultimate goal is to foster “a facilitator of global relationships and global partnerships, collectively with HBCUs,” moving away from what he perceives as a “siloed crab in a bucket mentality.”

  • Malcolm-Jamal Warner on Theo Huxtable Role

The recent passing of Malcolm-Jamal Warner left a void in the hearts of many, particularly within Black communities. In one of his final on-screen appearances, featured in Issa Rae’s documentary “Seen & Heard: The History of Black Television,” Warner shared poignant reflections on his iconic role as Theo Huxtable on “The Cosby Show.” This role not only defined a significant part of his career but also made him feel like a familiar presence in households across the nation.

    Auditioning for a Cultural Touchstone

Warner, who was just 13 when he auditioned for the part, recalled being influenced by the smart-aleck characters he saw on shows like “Diff’rent Strokes.” He felt he nailed his audition for “The Cosby Show,” earning smiles from most of the room. However, he specifically remembers Bill Cosby’s reaction.

Cosby, the show’s creator, looked at the young actor and asked, “Would you really talk to your father like that?” Upon Warner’s negative response, Cosby stated, “I don’t want to see that on this show.” This interaction highlights Cosby’s vision for the Huxtable family dynamic, aiming for a portrayal that emphasized respect and positive family interactions.

    Navigating ‘The Cosby Show’s’ Vision

Despite the show’s current controversial associations with Bill Cosby, “The Cosby Show” was undeniably a groundbreaking series. It presented a level of Black storytelling that was largely unexplored in Hollywood at the time. Warner noted that Cosby was fiercely protective of his vision for the show, constantly reminding network producers, writers, and the studio of the specific narrative they were creating.

Warner witnessed this dedication firsthand, stating, “I watched him do that from year one to year eight. That battle never, never stopped, until the show stopped.” This constant vigilance ensured the show maintained its unique identity and message throughout its successful run.

The Lasting Impact of the Huxtable Family

Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who tragically passed away on July 20, 2025, at the age of 54, continued to work on various projects after “The Cosby Show.” Yet, he remained acutely aware of the profound impact the Huxtable family had on Black viewers. He shared in the documentary how he received tens of thousands of letters from people who identified with the family, saying, “We are the Huxtables.”

Even though the show faced criticism for not always reflecting the entirety of the Black experience, its representation of a successful, loving Black family resonated deeply. Warner’s reflections in “Seen & Heard” offer a valuable look back at a pivotal moment in television history and the enduring legacy of his beloved character.

Fans can catch Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s final on-screen appearance in the upcoming premiere of Fox’s crime drama “Murder in a Small Town” on October 7. Both parts of “Seen & Heard: The History of Black Television” are available to stream on HBO Max.

  • Charleston White’s HBCU Visit Sparks Controversy

Well, it looks like internet personality Charleston White is in the headlines again, and this time it’s for an incident that unfolded on an HBCU campus. After attending a debate, things took a turn, and White reportedly found himself being chased off the grounds by students. The situation has sparked quite a buzz online, with clips circulating and many weighing in on the events.

    What Happened at Tougaloo College?

The incident occurred at Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi. Charleston White was present for a debate, but according to various reports and video clips, the discussion didn’t end amicably. It appears students became confrontational following his remarks, leading to him being escorted or chased away from the campus.

One viral clip captures White stating, “F–k racism, I don’t believe in racism.” This statement was met with a direct question from a student: “Why would you come to an HBCU?” The tension escalated from there, culminating in White’s hasty departure.

    Charleston White’s Explanation

Following the event, Charleston White took to YouTube to share his perspective on how things went awry. He explained that he wasn’t fully aware of the event’s setup or the specific context he was walking into.

White mentioned that a forum was arranged, complete with media presence, and he wasn’t expecting to be a scheduled speaker at a school event, let alone one involving multiple institutions. He stated, “I didn’t know I’m scheduled to speak at a school, but I didn’t know it was two schools.”

The turning point, according to White, came when he heard the line of questioning during the debate. He felt compelled to speak his mind when he heard a speaker, identified as ‘Dr. Scholar,’ discussing topics like ‘snitching’ in relation to slavery and oppression. White felt the need to offer his unfiltered thoughts to the students.

    The Debate’s Content

White elaborated on his reaction to the debate’s direction. He was taken aback by the intertwining of sensitive historical topics like slavery and persecution with the concept of ‘snitching.’ This particular line of discussion seemed to be the catalyst for his decision to engage more directly and, as he put it, ‘talk real to these kids.’

    Public Reaction and Online Buzz

As expected, the incident quickly gained traction on social media. Clips of the confrontation and White’s subsequent explanation have been widely shared and debated. The event has reignited discussions about free speech, campus environments, and the role of public figures engaging with student bodies, particularly at institutions like HBCUs.

The reactions online are varied, with some defending White’s right to express his views, while others criticize his approach and comments, especially in the context of an HBCU. It’s a complex situation that touches on many sensitive issues within the Black community and beyond.

It was a vibrant showcase of culture and pride, featuring a show-stopping performance from Florida A&M University’s renowned “Marching 100.” This event truly highlighted the rich heritage of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

  • NCAA Settlement: What HBCUs Need to Know

Big news is shaking up the world of college sports! The NCAA has reached a massive settlement, valued at over $2.7 billion, that’s set to change how athletes are compensated. While many are talking about how major programs will adjust, let’s dive into what this landmark deal truly means for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and the incredible athletes who represent them.

Recognizing Athlete Value: A Long Overdue Acknowledgment

For years, college athletes have been the driving force behind millions in revenue for the NCAA and their institutions, often receiving little more than a scholarship in return. The new House Settlement finally acknowledges this imbalance by providing back pay to thousands of former players. This recognition is particularly meaningful for HBCU athletes, validating their hard work and contributions that have often been overlooked.

While the financial payouts might not be as substantial as those for athletes at wealthier universities, this settlement represents a huge symbolic victory. It’s a powerful statement that the efforts of student-athletes, including those at HBCUs, have always held significant value and deserve to be part of the conversation.

Future Revenue Sharing: A Glimpse of What’s Next

Beyond addressing past inequities, the NCAA House Settlement also paves the way for future revenue-sharing models. This is a crucial development that could reshape how athletic departments operate and distribute funds. For HBCUs, understanding and adapting to these new models will be key to ensuring their continued competitiveness and sustainability in college athletics.

    Impact on NIL Opportunities

The settlement addresses past restrictions on Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) earnings. While the immediate focus is on back pay, the groundwork laid here could influence future NIL policies. This means potential new avenues for athletes at all levels, including those at HBCUs, to benefit financially from their athletic endeavors and personal brands.

    Leveling the Playing Field?

A significant question is whether this settlement will help level the playing field for HBCUs. While Power Five conferences will undoubtedly see major shifts, the long-term implications for schools with smaller budgets are still unfolding. The hope is that this settlement, coupled with evolving NIL rules, can create more equitable opportunities for athletes and institutions across the board.

    A Boost for HBCU Athletics

Ultimately, this settlement is a positive step for HBCU athletics. It brings much-needed recognition to the value of athletes’ contributions and sets the stage for potentially fairer financial models. As college sports continue to evolve, staying informed about these changes will be vital for HBCUs, their athletes, and their passionate fan bases.

  • George Raveling: A Basketball Trailblazer Remembered

The world of basketball is mourning the loss of a true legend, George Raveling, who passed away at the age of 88 after a courageous battle with cancer. Raveling wasn’t just a coach; he was a trailblazer who broke barriers, shaped careers, and left an indelible mark on sports and civil rights history.

    Breaking Barriers on the Court

Raveling’s coaching career was nothing short of historic. He made waves as the first Black head coach in the Pac-8 conference, leading Washington State from 1972 to 1983. He later coached at Iowa and USC, leaving a legacy of dedication and excellence. His impact extended beyond head coaching roles; he was also the first Black assistant coach in the ACC at Maryland and served as an assistant coach for the 1984 U.S. Olympic basketball team.

His achievements were recognized with inductions into prestigious halls of fame, including the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015. These honors are a testament to his profound influence on the game.

The Architect Behind a Legendary Deal

Beyond his coaching prowess, Raveling played a pivotal role in one of the most iconic endorsement deals in sports history. While working for Nike as its global sports marketing director, he was instrumental in convincing a young Michael Jordan to sign with the company. Jordan himself acknowledged Raveling’s crucial influence, stating that Raveling was the one who urged him to choose Nike.

Raveling’s connection to Jordan went back to the 1984 Olympics, where he consistently encouraged the future superstar to join the Nike team. He was also a close friend, serving as the best man at Sonny Vaccaro’s second wedding, the marketing executive who also played a key role in the Jordan deal.

A Life of Service and Dignity

Raveling’s impact stretched far beyond the realm of sports. A lesser-known but deeply significant part of his life was his role as a bodyguard at Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington in 1963. He even acquired the original copy of MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech, later donating it to his alma mater, Villanova University.

Born in Washington, D.C., in 1937, Raveling experienced segregation firsthand. His family beautifully captured his journey: “Born in a segregated hospital and rising to the halls of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, George never lost his love for life, his resilience, his childlike curiosity, nor his unshakable belief in treating every person with dignity and respect.” He remained a lifelong learner, a kind soul, and a constant inspiration to others.

  • Grambling Student Arrested for HIV Exposure

A disturbing incident has sent shockwaves through the Grambling State University campus. A student, Traymond Wright, has been arrested and charged with intentionally exposing another student to HIV. The arrest has sparked outrage among students and parents, highlighting critical issues surrounding sexual health and disclosure.

    Incident Details Emerge

According to reports, campus police responded to a call about a couple engaging in sexual activity in a library bathroom. Upon arrival, 20-year-old Traymond Wright reportedly admitted to being involved and confessed that he had been diagnosed with HIV. He was subsequently arrested after questioning at the campus police station.

Authorities determined that Wright was aware of his HIV-positive status and willingly engaged in intercourse with an unsuspecting individual, potentially exposing them to the virus. This led to his arrest on serious charges.

    Legal Ramifications and Bail

Wright has been charged with intentional exposure to the AIDS virus and booked into the Lincoln Parish Detention Center in Ruston, Louisiana. The court has set a substantial bond of $100,000. It remains unclear if he has posted bail. Failing to disclose HIV status before sexual activity is considered a serious crime in many states, and given the allegations of intentional withholding, Wright could face additional charges.

    University Response and Student Safety

In the wake of the incident, Grambling State University officials have moved to reassure the student body about their commitment to health and safety. An email was sent to all students detailing the situation and strongly encouraging them to get tested for HIV at the Johnson Health Center. The university also provided information on preventative care and sex education resources.

This event underscores the importance of open communication, responsible sexual practices, and accessible health resources on college campuses. The university’s proactive communication aims to address student concerns and promote a safer campus environment.

  • Nathan Fluellen: Bridging HBCU Roots to Surf Culture

Nathan Fluellen’s journey is a testament to turning inspiration into impactful action. From his beginnings at Tennessee State University (TSU) to becoming an award-winning travel TV host and a revolutionary force in surf culture, Fluellen has dedicated two decades to breaking barriers. As the founder of ‘A Great Day in the Stoke,’ the largest gathering of Black surfers in history, and the creator of the acclaimed series ‘World Wide Nate,’ he’s fostering community and celebrating Black joy, particularly in the ocean.

    From TSU to Global Exploration

Fluellen’s global curiosity was sparked during his time at TSU. Inspired by his International Economics professor, Dr. Galen Hull, who challenged him to travel more than 80 countries and become an entrepreneur, Fluellen embraced the idea of seeing the world. Growing up with family members who traveled extensively, he always viewed global exploration as an adult pursuit, and his professor’s words solidified his own path.

His experience as an HBCU graduate from TSU, with its emphasis on ‘Think, Work, Serve,’ deeply influences his approach to community building. This ethos is evident in ‘A Great Day in the Stoke,’ where he aims to celebrate Black existence and foster happiness through a shared love for the ocean and life, mirroring the spirit of HBCU homecoming culture.

    Championing Black Representation in Surf

Fluellen recognized a critical need for representation in surf culture. Having learned to swim at a young age and assuming it was a common activity for Black people, he was struck by the lack of Black surfers he saw when the movie ‘Point Break’ came out. This realization fueled his desire to ensure that no child’s dreams of surfing are deferred due to a lack of visible role models. ‘A Great Day in the Stoke’ actively broadcasts images of Black people enjoying the ocean, promoting Black joy and water safety globally.

His most transformative travel experience involved swimming with sharks without a cage in Brazil. Despite initial nervousness due to ear congestion, a timely medication allowed him to proceed. The dive, a testament to ‘mind over matter’ and positive encouragement, was an amazing encounter with 12 sharks swimming around him.

Beyond Media: Kavata Swimwear and Kavata Kids

Fluellen extends his mission of access and equity beyond media production through Kavata Swimwear and Kavata Kids. Kavata Swimwear offers a unique ‘spin and flavor’ to the surf industry, reflecting his personal taste and culture. Kavata Kids, named after his late sister Laini Kavata Fluellen who passed from breast cancer, focuses on providing free swim lessons to inner-city youth. His goal is to introduce children to aquatic lifestyles, potentially opening doors to careers like lifeguarding or marine biology.

Fluellen hopes to leave a legacy of joy and freedom, encouraging people to explore the world without feeling confined. He believes in living life to the fullest, enjoying every aspect of the Earth, and inspiring others to adopt a similar approach. His message is simple: life is beautiful, and we have only one chance to experience it.

What inspires you most about Nathan Fluellen’s work? How can we promote more Black joy and representation in outdoor and athletic communities? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
