Jasmine Crockett on MTG’s Resignation: ‘Can’t Take the Heat’

U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett has strong words for her Republican colleague, Marjorie Taylor Greene, following Greene’s announcement that she will resign from Congress. Crockett characterized Greene’s decision, made after a public falling out with former President Donald Trump, as an inability to handle political pressure.

Crockett’s Reaction to Greene’s Departure

Reacting to Greene’s resignation, effective January 5th, Crockett expressed disbelief. “Honestly, I was like, you’ve got to be kidding me. You’re on the other side of the president for one week, and you can’t take the heat?” Crockett told CNN. Greene, a long-time staunch supporter of Trump, cited a “broken” political system as her reason for leaving.

However, Crockett views Greene’s exit as an act of cowardice, especially given Greene’s own history of inciting Trump’s base against other members of Congress, including Crockett herself. “Imagine what it is to sit in my shoes, to not only be on the opposite side of him, but to have people like her who are constantly fanning the flames of hate,” Crockett stated, referencing the threats she has faced.

The Epstein Files Controversy and Trump’s Influence

When CNN’s Jake Tapper suggested Greene’s resignation might be linked to her support for releasing the Jeffrey Epstein files – an effort that initially put her at odds with Trump – Crockett pointed out that other Republicans who took similar stances weathered the storm. Representatives Thomas Massie and Lauren Boebert, for example, signed the discharge petition but did not face the same level of backlash from Trump.

Crockett highlighted the inconsistency, stating, “So you know, this really speaks to the fact that Marjorie, who has been an instigator of a lot of this hate that we see as it relates to the MAGA movement…it’s just interesting that I don’t know if she really fully understood how bad she was making it for other people, and now that they’re doing it to her, you know, I just got to say, ‘Well, why is it that everyone else is able to stand and you can’t?’”

Resilience Amidst Attacks

Crockett, a prominent Democrat and former civil rights attorney, has herself been a frequent target of Trump’s personal attacks, often labeled with derogatory terms like “Low IQ.” These attacks have fueled heightened online harassment and death threats against her. However, Crockett remains unfazed, emphasizing her commitment to serving her constituents in Texas’s 30th congressional district.

“At the end of the day, I know that I serve the people of Texas 30 and so my job isn’t to be there and necessarily do whatever is going to make the President not be on my back,” she said. “But instead is to focus on making sure that I can push forward with policies that are positive for Texas 30.”
