In the wake of a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, former President Donald Trump has seized upon the event to bolster his case for a controversial $400 million White House ballroom project currently under construction.
A ‘Militarily Top Secret Ballroom’ Justification
Hours after a suspect reportedly ran past security and fired shots at the Washington Hilton Hotel, Trump took to Truth Social, stating, ‘This event would never have happened with the Militarily Top Secret Ballroom currently under construction at the White House.’ He argued that the proposed ballroom, which he described as larger, more secure, drone-proof, and equipped with bulletproof glass, is essential for national security.
Speaking to reporters, Trump emphasized that the Secret Service and military have been demanding such a facility for years, citing the need for unprecedented security levels. While the suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, was apprehended before reaching Trump, the incident marked the third alleged attempt on the former president’s life, with Allen’s manifesto reportedly indicating a targeting of Trump and his administration.
Resuming Construction Amidst Controversy
Trump reiterated his stance on social media the following morning, calling the ballroom a ‘large, safe, and secure Ballroom’ that is ‘on budget and substantially ahead of schedule.’ He dismissed ongoing lawsuits challenging the construction as ‘ridiculous’ and lacking standing.
The project, which involved the demolition of the historic White House East Wing, has faced significant backlash from preservationists and Democrats. Critics have labeled it a vanity project, raising concerns about the lack of transparency regarding its private funding and potential pay-for-play activities.
Legal Battles and Security Concerns
Construction was initially halted by a federal judge due to procedural concerns but resumed after an appeals court allowed it to proceed, considering the administration’s national security arguments. The next court hearing is scheduled for June 5.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, held annually at the Washington Hilton Hotel since 1968, is not an official White House event. Trump’s swift use of the shooting to validate his expensive ballroom project is likely to fuel further speculation and distrust, particularly given his history of controversial statements.
