Trump Sends ICE to Airports Amid TSA Crisis

In a move that has sparked significant backlash, the Trump administration has deployed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to U.S. airport checkpoints. This decision comes as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) grapples with severe staffing shortages, with hundreds of workers quitting and thousands more working without pay due to the ongoing government shutdown.

Critics Question the Effectiveness and Safety

The deployment has drawn sharp criticism from Democrats and government employee unions, who argue that using ICE agents does not effectively address the TSA’s needs and raises serious safety concerns. President Trump announced the deployment on Saturday, stating that ICE would perform the job “far better than ever done before” if Democrats didn’t agree to “Just and Proper Security at our Airports.” He accused Democrats of creating a “disgrace” for TSA officers and the American people.

However, Democrats counter that Republicans have blocked bills aimed at paying TSA workers while negotiations over Homeland Security and ICE funding continue. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries stated, “It’s unfortunate that Republicans have decided that they would rather force TSA agents to work without pay, inconvenience millions of Americans all across the country, and now potentially expose them to untrained ICE agents and create chaos at airports throughout the land, rather than get ICE agents under control.”

Union Voices Strong Opposition

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), the union representing TSA workers, strongly rebuked the administration’s decision. National President Everett Kelley emphasized that TSA officers undergo specialized, months-long training to detect threats, skills that cannot be improvised by other law enforcement personnel. “You cannot improvise that. Putting untrained personnel at security checkpoints does not fill a gap. It creates one,” Kelley stated.

Kelley added, “Our members at TSA have been showing up every day, without a paycheck, because they believe in the mission of keeping the flying public safe. They deserve to be paid, not replaced by untrained, armed agents who have shown how dangerous they can be.”

Passenger Frustration Mounts

Passengers are also expressing their frustration and disbelief. One traveler at LaGuardia Airport told MS Now’s Maya Eaglin, “I don’t agree with ICE at all, anyway. They always seem like they’re on, like just a power trip, and they just want to have control over things.” Another traveler voiced their exasperation, saying, “Enough is enough. ICE was not paid to come to the airport… they don’t need to be here. My true reaction is stop the bulls—t.”
