Snoop Dogg is making moves to exit the legal proceedings surrounding the tragic death of rapper Drakeo The Ruler. His company has filed a motion asking a judge to grant a “summary judgment,” essentially seeking to be removed from the wrongful death lawsuit.
The Lawsuit’s Origins
The lawsuit was filed in 2022 by Drakeo’s brother, following the rapper’s death from stab wounds sustained backstage at the “Once Upon a Time in L.A.” festival on December 18, 2021. Drakeo, whose real name was Darrell Caldwell, passed away the following day at the age of 28.
In the recent motion, Snoop Dogg’s LLC argues that it had no operational control over the festival. The company states it did not manage security, plan the event, or oversee the specific area where the stabbing occurred. Their declaration emphasizes a lack of involvement in the festival’s operations and no ownership or lease interest in the venue, Exposition Park.
Snoop’s Role as Performer
Snoop’s legal team further contends that his involvement was strictly limited to being a performer at the festival. They assert that this role represents the full extent of his connection to the event, aiming to prove his company’s lack of responsibility for the security failures alleged in the lawsuit.
The lawsuit itself accuses various event organizers and related entities of providing insufficient security measures, deeming them “woefully inadequate.” While Live Nation, USC, Los Angeles FC, and Bobby Dee Presents were initially named defendants, USC, LAFC, and Bobby Dee Presents have already been dismissed from the case earlier this year.
An Unsolved Tragedy
Tragically, Drakeo’s killing remains unsolved, with no arrests made and no suspects publicly identified by the police. Despite bystander footage capturing the chaotic events backstage, there has reportedly been minimal cooperation from witnesses, making the investigation challenging.
