A recent reissue of Aaliyah’s 1994 debut album, ‘Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number,’ has fans talking, but not just about the music. Many listeners are noticing something peculiar on sealed copies: a hype sticker seems to be strategically placed right over R. Kelly’s face on the album cover.
Aaliyah’s Estate Adds to the Buzz
Adding fuel to the speculation, Aaliyah’s official social media account posted a cryptic message. “We hope that y’all listened to instructions carefully While bumpin’ ‘Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number’ the just released reissue on your record players this week,” the post read, followed by a playful yet pointed “Aaliyah’s got a 90’s swing So be careful and share your copy with us please.”
The account also shared a TikTok video from a fan showcasing the record, where the sticker obscured Kelly on the front, and the fan’s thumb cleverly hid his name on the back. Soon, other fans chimed in, confirming similar sticker placements on their own copies, and the post quickly went viral.
The History Behind the Cover
For context, R. Kelly was instrumental in launching Aaliyah’s career, having written, produced, and performed on her debut album. This collaboration came about after he met Aaliyah through her uncle, Barry Hankerson. Their professional relationship later became the subject of intense scrutiny and rumors of a secret marriage, which would have been highly controversial given Aaliyah’s young age at the time.
Aaliyah tragically passed away in 2001 at just 22 years old. R. Kelly has since been convicted of federal racketeering and sex trafficking charges in 2021. The current placement of the sticker on the vinyl reissue has led many fans to interpret it as a deliberate statement from Aaliyah’s estate, distancing the artist from her former mentor and collaborator.
What do you think about the sticker placement on Aaliyah’s vinyl? Is it a subtle statement or just a coincidence? Share your thoughts in the comments!
