Big news in the political and legal world! Donald Trump’s massive $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) might be heading towards a resolution outside the courtroom. Instead of a lengthy legal battle, it appears both sides are exploring a settlement.
Settlement Talks Underway
Recent court filings reveal that attorneys for Trump and the IRS are actively discussing a potential settlement. This case centers on claims that Trump’s confidential tax returns were unlawfully leaked to media outlets back in 2019 and 2020. The discussions aim to resolve the matter efficiently and avoid prolonged litigation.
In a joint filing submitted to the federal court in Miami, both parties have requested a 90-day suspension of the case. This pause is intended to allow ample time for these crucial settlement discussions to take place, potentially narrowing or even resolving the core issues.
The Origin of the Lawsuit
The lawsuit was initiated after confidential information from Trump’s tax returns found its way to publications like The New York Times and ProPublica. Reports published in 2020 suggested that these records indicated Trump paid very little, or no, federal income taxes in several years. The plaintiffs in this significant case also include Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and the Trump Organization.
The Role of Charles Littlejohn
The controversy traces back to former IRS contractor Charles Littlejohn. Prosecutors charged him in 2023 with leaking Trump’s records, as well as tax data belonging to thousands of other wealthy Americans. Officials stated that Littlejohn acted with a political motive and he has since pleaded guilty to improper disclosures, receiving a five-year prison sentence.
It’s worth noting that any financial settlement reached in this lawsuit would likely be funded by taxpayers. Trump has previously stated his intention to donate any recovered funds to charity. This situation also presents a unique legal dynamic, as Trump is suing agencies within the executive branch that he himself leads.
