HBCU AwareFest is set to take place in Atlanta, bringing together prominent Black leaders from diverse sectors to support Black scholars and tackle the critical issue of student loan debt. Produced by Student Freedom Initiative in partnership with Live Nation Urban and the City of Atlanta, the event aims to become the largest fundraiser dedicated to reducing student loan debt for students attending historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
A Star-Studded Lineup for a Cause
The festival boasts an impressive lineup of legendary figures from Black Hollywood and the business world. The benefit concert alone features headliners such as Jill Scott, Earth, Wind & Fire, Kirk Franklin, and GloRilla, among many others. Beyond the musical performances, special appearances will include sessions led by influential figures covering crucial topics.
The “Impact Fest” component of the event aims to educate attendees on financial literacy and resources designed to help students navigate college life with less financial strain. This focus is particularly relevant as Black scholars, many of whom attend HBCUs, bear a disproportionate burden of student loan debt, averaging $52,000.
Comprehensive Programming for Student Success
Kicking off on March 21st at the Atlanta University Center Robert Woodruff Library and Promenade, HBCU AwareFest will feature a daylong summit covering topics from financial empowerment to mental health awareness. The initial day’s programming includes money-focused conversations co-hosted by MC Lyte, entrepreneurship panels, and sexual health discussions led by TS Madison and Saucy Santana, all aimed at guiding students toward safe and successful college navigation.
The following day will host an AI Innovation challenge, a pitch event where students will present their AI-powered projects to tech leaders and business titans, showcasing plans for AI integration in various industries. The week continues on March 24th with a comedy show featuring Deon Cole and fellow comedians, followed by “The State of HBCUs” Executive Summit at the Ebenezer Baptist Church. Moderated by Roland Martin, this session will include HBCU presidents discussing the progress of these storied institutions.
Fireside Chat with Robert F. Smith and Tyler Perry
Adding to the star power, billionaire investor Robert F. Smith, known for paying off the student loan debt of Morehouse’s 2019 graduating class, will lead a fireside chat. Joined by honored guests Daymond John and Chris Womack, Smith will discuss the future of Black wealth and entrepreneurship, highlighting the pivotal role HBCUs play in this development. The week culminates in a highly anticipated concert, with VIP guests having the option to attend from Smith’s private viewing suite, all contributing to a financial impact aimed at shaping the futures of HBCU scholars.
