A disturbing incident captured on video has sent shockwaves through the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) community. A Clark Atlanta University (CAU) junior alleges she was violently strangled by a Morehouse College student, with the altercation quickly spreading across social media.
The Confrontation Unfolds
The incident reportedly began on a campus shuttle. According to CAU junior Kayla Bryant, who shared her account on TikTok, the situation escalated after a couple sitting in front of her began being overly affectionate. When she moved seats, she claims the male student stepped on her foot.
Bryant states she asked for an apology, but the student refused. As she walked away, she alleges the student’s girlfriend confronted her, asking if there was a problem. Words were exchanged, and Bryant claims the girlfriend initiated physical contact by putting her hands in her face.
Allegations of Violent Assault
Bryant alleges that after the girlfriend turned to the Morehouse student and said, ‘You got it, bae?’, the assault began. She claims he picked her up and started strangling her, leaving her struggling to breathe and yelling threats, including that he was going to kill her. The viral footage appears to corroborate these claims, showing a male student attacking and strangling a female.
In a follow-up post, Bryant shared an update after visiting the hospital, writing, ‘A stranger tried to take my life today, but God gave me two hands and feet so that’s cool.’ The video footage has garnered hundreds of thousands of views and shares, intensifying public scrutiny.
Institutional Responses and Calls for Accountability
Neither the Atlanta Police Department nor the involved institutions have publicly released the names of those involved, nor have they announced any arrests or disciplinary actions. However, both Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University have issued statements addressing the incident.
Morehouse College’s Office of Student Services described the behavior as ‘disappointing’ and ‘completely inconsistent’ with the college’s values. They stated that their Campus Safety and Student Services team is investigating through established conduct processes and is working closely with CAU and the Atlanta Police Department. Morehouse President Dr. F. Dubois further condemned violence, especially against women, emphasizing that such actions have no place in the Morehouse community.
Commitment to Student Well-being
Clark Atlanta University President George T. French Jr. also released a statement expressing deep concern over the assault. He reiterated that the safety and well-being of students are the institution’s top priority and called the display of violence ‘unacceptable’ and ‘intolerable,’ particularly when directed at women.
As the investigation continues, internet sleuths have circulated alleged identities of the individuals involved. The girlfriend, after being named online, updated her Instagram bio stating she would share her side of the story soon. The situation remains a critical point of discussion regarding campus safety and accountability within the HBCU community.
