Florida Lawmaker Wants Trump Airport Name

Get ready for a potential name change in the Sunshine State! A Republican lawmaker in Florida is pushing to rename Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) in honor of former President Donald Trump. State Representative Meg Weinberger, who represents District 94, believes this would be a ‘fitting tribute’ to the former president.

A Proposal for Donald J. Trump International Airport

Weinberger formally proposed the renaming on X (formerly Twitter) on November 3rd, suggesting the airport be known as Donald J. Trump International Airport. She stated, “America’s greatest president deserves an airport that bears his name.” Weinberger emphasized the move as a way to honor Trump’s ‘extraordinary leadership and hometown roots.’

Interestingly, while the proposal highlights Trump’s connection to Palm Beach due to his Mar-a-Lago residence, he was actually born and raised in New York City’s Queens borough. This detail adds a layer to the discussion about the proposed tribute.

Precedent for Presidential Airport Names

Renaming airports after presidents isn’t a new concept in the United States. Perhaps the most famous example is New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), originally known as New York International Airport. After President Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, the airport was renamed in his honor. Other notable examples include Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).

Weinberger’s Previous Efforts

This isn’t Weinberger’s first initiative to honor Trump. She has previously co-introduced legislation to designate a four-mile stretch of road in Palm Beach County as “President Donald J. Trump Boulevard.” Local officials reportedly voted unanimously in September to rename this section of Southern Boulevard, which conveniently runs from the airport to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.

Weinberger, a resident of Palm Beach Gardens since 1979, has been a member of the Florida House of Representatives since late 2024. Trump himself endorsed her candidacy in June 2024, referring to her as ‘MAGA Meg’ on Truth Social.

A Legacy and a Tribute

In a follow-up post on November 6th, Weinberger reiterated her stance, stating, “Presidents leave legacies that endure for generations.” She believes naming the airport after Trump would be a fitting tribute, celebrating his impact on America and joining other presidents honored throughout history.
