Get ready for a unique blend of culture, art, and nostalgia! The Most Incredible Studio (MIS), known for transforming cherished memories into tangible LEGO collectibles, has announced Dr. Yaba Blay as its very first Professional Black Girl-in-Residence. This exciting collaboration aims to celebrate Black womanhood through art, starting with an iconic symbol: the bamboo earring.
Dr. Blay, a respected scholar and the visionary behind the multimedia platform Professional Black Girl, is partnering with MIS founder Syreeta Gates. Together, they are fusing art, culture, and personal history to create meaningful pieces. Their first project, a limited-edition LEGO collectible titled “Bamboo Earrings,” pays tribute to the Black women who made this accessory a cultural staple.
A Tribute to Iconic Style
The “Bamboo Earrings” collectible, unveiled on November 11, is crafted entirely from LEGO bricks. It’s a vibrant homage to the style and significance of bamboo earrings within Black culture. Dr. Blay expressed immense gratitude for the outpouring of support following the debut, sharing on Instagram, “From the minute I sent my newsletter out at 8 am to this very moment that I’m writing, I have been wrapped in LOVE.”
She elaborated on the creative process, explaining the desire to capture the story of the bamboo earring within the context of Black girlhood. The team chose a jewelry store setting for the photoshoot, thanks to a connection in Chicago, making the backdrop as authentic as the art itself. The resulting images, captured by @thesirtaylor, are described as “MAGICAL.”
More Than Just Collectibles
This residency marks a new initiative for MIS, focused on collaborating with cultural leaders to bring stories and traditions to life through their unique LEGO artifacts. Fans can anticipate more limited-edition pieces from Dr. Blay, along with special packaging, keepsake elements, community conversations, and behind-the-scenes content detailing the creative journey.
Dr. Blay’s work has previously been recognized in major publications like The New York Times and ESSENCE. Her upcoming book, “To Become Beautiful,” follows her groundbreaking work “One Drop: Shifting the Lens on Race.” MIS founder Syreeta Gates praised Dr. Blay’s “brilliance” and her lifelong commitment to celebrating Black women, calling the collaboration “even more special” because they are dear friends.
At Most Incredible Studio, our mission is to make memory tangible, and I’m elated that together we get to bring elements from our culture into form in a way that people can play with, build, and remember. — Syreeta Gates
This partnership beautifully merges artistic innovation with cultural preservation, allowing people to engage with and build upon elements of Black culture in a playful and memorable way.
