  • Dr. Yaba Blay & MIS Create ‘The BAMBOO’ LEGO Artifact

In a powerful act of cultural preservation and artistic innovation, Most Incredible Studio (MIS) has announced its inaugural Artist-In-Residence: the esteemed scholar, cultural worker, and visionary, Dr. Yaba Blay. This collaboration brings us ‘The BAMBOO,’ a stunning collectible artifact meticulously crafted from LEGO® bricks, transforming the enduring symbol of the bamboo earring into a monumental testament to Black womanhood.

Infusing Black Girl Culture into LEGO Culture

For the next year, Dr. Blay, the force behind the dynamic multimedia platform Professional Black Girl®, will be infusing Black Girl culture into the world of LEGO. ‘THE BAMBOO is making its way into y’all’s hands!!’ Blay exclaimed on Instagram, highlighting the significant and growing community of #BlackGirlsWhoLego. This project is deeply meaningful, aiming to create collectibles that truly reflect and celebrate Black girl culture.

The BAMBOO artifact is more than just a nostalgic nod; it’s a profound assertion of inherent worth. It preserves a shared language of style, self-definition, and belonging, reminding collectors that everyday cultural elements are sacred. By turning a familiar, often politicized symbol of identity into a cherished monument, the collaboration beautifully honors the creativity, beauty, and brilliance of Black women everywhere.

From Street Fashion to Cultural Canon

The act of building this LEGO artifact carries the same pride as wearing the iconic bamboo earring itself. It elevates the symbol from a piece of street fashion to a recognized element within the cultural canon. Each BAMBOO piece is designed with 303 LEGO® bricks and comes with a custom assembly guide and a photo editorial, capturing the essence of a culture that can be built, played with, and proudly displayed.

As MIS describes it, ‘BAMBOO — A Cultural Composition is available exclusively at mostincrediblestud.io. This is not a LEGO® set.’ This distinction emphasizes that the artifact is a piece of art and history, not a toy, reinforcing its significance.

    A Force of Cultural Preservation

Dr. Blay, known for her work validating and codifying marginalized narratives, brings her sharp scholarly perspective to this residency. Her platform, Professional Black Girl®, celebrates the everyday genius and lived experiences of Black women and girls, challenging respectability politics and embracing freedom of self-definition. The philosophy posits that ‘Black Girl Magic’ is a ubiquitous state, not just for extraordinary achievements.

This initiative aligns perfectly with MIS’s mission to make memory visible. Dr. Blay’s work to assert an unapologetic identity, combined with MIS’s collectible creations, forms a powerful force for cultural preservation. As Dr. Blay herself stated about the collaboration, ‘The idea of merging what she does with what we do and how we do it is beyond exciting—it’s necessary.’

The limited-edition BAMBOO artifact comes in MIS’s signature collectible packaging, complete with a custom booklet and keepsake elements, further solidifying its status as a piece of history. This residency program is set to expand, spotlighting creators from various traditions and ensuring that MIS continues to be a vital space for preserving and celebrating cultural narratives.

Their first project, a limited-edition LEGO collectible titled “Bamboo Earrings,” pays tribute to the Black women who made this accessory a cultural staple.

    A Tribute to Iconic Style

The “Bamboo Earrings” collectible, unveiled on November 11, is crafted entirely from LEGO bricks. It’s a vibrant homage to the style and significance of bamboo earrings within Black culture. Dr. Blay expressed immense gratitude for the outpouring of support following the debut, sharing on Instagram, “From the minute I sent my newsletter out at 8 am to this very moment that I’m writing, I have been wrapped in LOVE.”

The resulting images, captured by @thesirtaylor, are described as “MAGICAL.”
