After years of legal back-and-forth, a federal judge in California has officially dismissed the paternity lawsuit filed against hip-hop mogul Jay-Z. This ruling puts a definitive end to the claims made by Rymir Satterthwaite, who alleged that the rapper is his biological father.
The Lawsuit and Its Dismissal
The lawsuit, brought forward by Rymir Satterthwaite, 30, through his legal guardian and paralegal Lillie Coley, claimed that Jay-Z (born Shawn Carter) fathered him during a relationship with Rymir’s late mother, Wanda Satterthwaite, in the 1990s. Jay-Z has consistently denied these allegations throughout the legal proceedings.
Court documents obtained by Page Six reveal that the judge granted Jay-Z’s motion to dismiss the case “with prejudice.” This means Satterthwaite can no longer refile the same claim or demand a DNA test from the music icon. Attorneys for Jay-Z described the repeated claims as baseless, calling the filings “the latest” in a “decades-long” pattern of harassment and noting they have been “addressed — and rejected — in multiple other courts.”
A Long Legal History
The legal dispute traces back to the early 2000s when Wanda Satterthwaite first filed a child support case in New Jersey, which was dismissed due to improper jurisdiction. The claim resurfaced in 2014 when Satterthwaite and Coley renewed their petition. Rymir Satterthwaite himself seemed to acknowledge stepping back from the case in a July Instagram post, stating, “I did withdraw my case,” but insisted his “pursuit of the truth was not over.”
Satterthwaite had previously stated his intention was not to seek back child support but rather to recover damages for “reputational and emotional distress.” He also accused Carter of manipulating the court system to suppress his claims. Jay-Z’s legal team has consistently maintained that the allegations are unfounded and have been thoroughly reviewed and refuted by the courts.
Related Lawsuit and Potential Appeal
The dismissal also extended to a related lawsuit filed by Lillie Coley, Satterthwaite’s godmother and legal guardian, who accused Jay-Z of neglect. U.S. District Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett dismissed Coley’s case earlier this week, preventing her from bringing similar allegations again. This ruling also opened the possibility for Jay-Z’s legal team to seek sanctions and recover attorney’s fees.
However, the legal battle might not be completely over. Reports indicate that Coley has filed a notice of appeal with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, submitted on November 5th. Her filing suggests an effort to challenge the decision, focusing on “issues not previously considered” by the court.
Jay-Z’s Family Life
Jay-Z, who shares three children – Blue Ivy, 13, and twins Rumi and Sir, 8 – with his wife, Beyoncé, has consistently denied fathering Rymir Satterthwaite. Despite the ongoing legal challenges from Coley’s side, the rapper’s legal team remains confident in their position.
