Baltimore Mayor Launches $4.6M Aid Fund

In response to the ongoing government shutdown, which has now entered its 30th day, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has announced a significant aid program to support residents facing hardship. The city is allocating $4.6 million to help constituents navigate the financial challenges caused by the federal funding lapse.

A Lifeline for Baltimore Residents

The newly established program, totaling $4,685,000, draws from a combination of fiscal year 2025 aid packages and American Rescue Plan Act funds. Mayor Scott emphasized that this initiative is crucial for helping residents cover essential needs like food, rent, and childcare. It also extends support to hospital-based violence responders whose services rely on federal funding.

This funding comes at a critical time, especially as SNAP benefits, commonly known as food stamps, are set to be affected by the shutdown by November 1. With one in eight Americans relying on these benefits for nourishment, Scott wants to assure Baltimore citizens that the city is stepping in to help bridge the gap.

Targeted Allocations for Maximum Impact

The substantial funds are being distributed strategically. Approximately $1.7 million will go towards food assistance, benefiting organizations like the Maryland Food Bank, The Food Project, So What Else, and the Baltimore Hunger Project. This is vital for a city where nearly 12,000 federal workers call home and may be facing furloughs.

Further allocations include nearly $1 million dedicated to childcare services for impacted federal workers and another $1 million for rental and living assistance, offering a crucial safety net for those struggling to cover their housing costs. An additional $975,000 is earmarked to support hospitals involved in community violence prevention programs, ensuring the continuity of life-saving services and neighborhood safety initiatives.

A Collaborative Effort

Mayor Scott acknowledged that city funds cannot fully replace federal support but stressed the commitment to assisting those most affected. “If nobody else got us, we have to have our own selves,” he stated, highlighting the city’s self-reliance in times of crisis. This initiative is part of a broader effort by Maryland leaders to support residents, including Governor Wes Moore’s Federal Shutdown Loan Program.

Local representatives, including Maryland Democratic Reps. Kweisi Mfume and Johnny Olszewski, have applauded Scott’s proactive measures. Mfume also voiced criticism towards the federal administration, suggesting that funds allocated elsewhere could have been better used to address critical needs like SNAP benefits.
