  • Baltimore Mayor Condemns Violence After Dentist’s Death

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott is using his platform to address a deeply troubling issue following the tragic murder of Dr. Cerina Wanzer Fairfax. He’s calling out what he describes as unacceptable behavior among men, emphasizing the need for accountability and urging them to intervene when they witness concerning actions from their peers.

    A Call for Male Accountability

Dr. Fairfax, a respected dentist and mother, is being remembered by loved ones as her death sparks renewed conversations about violence against Black women. Mayor Scott took to Threads to express his grief and frustration, stating, “Fellas we have to be better. Too many folks trying to make excuses. There are none.”

He specifically condemned “sucka a** coward behavior” that often goes unchecked. Scott highlighted the devastating consequences, noting, “Too many dudes surrounded by other dudes who don’t check their homeboys for stuff that leads to stuff like this. So much more to it I know but now a woman is gone and her kids are orphans.”

A Life Focused on the Future

According to her close friend Glennetta White, who knew Dr. Fairfax for 25 years, the 49-year-old was on the cusp of a new chapter. Her divorce was nearing completion, and she was looking forward to regaining normalcy. “As far as Cerina was concerned, she had a few more days to go and it would all be over. She was finally going to be free,” White shared.

White described their last conversation as routine, with Dr. Fairfax focused on her practice, her children, and her family. She wasn’t living in fear but was “desperate to get some normalcy back” and was actively “moving on, turning the page.”

    Investigation into Divorce Proceedings

Fairfax County police confirmed that Justin Fairfax, Dr. Fairfax’s husband, allegedly shot his wife before taking his own life. The incident occurred while their teenage children were reportedly at home. Police Chief Kevin Davis stated that investigators are examining whether the ongoing divorce proceedings played a role in the tragedy.

This incident has intensified conversations about violence against Black women, a pattern that continues to be a critical concern. Colleagues at Virginia Commonwealth University remember Dr. Fairfax as a dedicated clinician and mentor who embodied professionalism and purpose.

Mayor Scott’s message is clear: excuses are not acceptable. What are your thoughts on the importance of male accountability in preventing violence? Share your views in the comments below.

  • Missing Man’s Body Found in Baltimore Harbor

A somber end to a nearly two-week search: the body of a missing 27-year-old Baltimore man has been recovered from the Inner Harbor. Branson Oduor’s disappearance after a night out with friends has now transitioned into a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Tragic Discovery in the Inner Harbor

Authorities confirmed the recovery of Oduor’s body on Tuesday morning, April 15, 2026. Officers responded to a report of a person floating in the water near East Pratt Street around 8 a.m. The discovery brings a heartbreaking conclusion to the efforts of his family, friends, and local law enforcement who had been desperately searching for him.

    The Search for Answers

Oduor was last seen in the early hours of April 4th in the Fells Point area, where he had gone to celebrate March Madness. His loved ones, including his girlfriend Emily Costa and his mother Millicent Oduor, spearheaded an extensive search, with his father even traveling from Kenya to join the effort. Police were also actively involved, deploying a dive team to aid in the search.

Surveillance footage later showed Oduor outside a bar in Fells Point, having reportedly been escorted out earlier that night. While someone attempted to help him into a ride-share, he declined the assistance. Further clues emerged, including the discovery of his electric bike near South President Street several days after his last known sighting.

    Ongoing Investigation

The body has since been transported to the medical examiner’s office, where the official cause of death will be determined. As of now, police have not released specific details regarding how Oduor died, and the investigation is actively continuing. • Maryland Black Community Fights Wetlands Development

In East Towson, Maryland, a battle is brewing over land that holds deep historical significance. This historically Black community, founded by formerly enslaved people in the 1850s, is now fighting to protect its last remaining forest and wetlands from a proposed housing development. Residents argue this project threatens not only their environment but also generations of history and community preservation.

    A Legacy Under Threat

East Towson stands as a powerful symbol of Black resilience and self-determination. However, recent development pressures are casting a shadow over this legacy. The proposed “Red Maple Place” project, a 56-unit affordable housing development, has already faced a temporary halt from the Maryland Department of the Environment due to state permit violations. For residents, this pause is a small victory in a much larger, ongoing struggle.

The development, planned for a mere 2.5 acres, could have significant environmental consequences. Advocates point out that it would drastically reduce the required forest buffer from 100 feet to just 25 feet. This reduction raises serious concerns about increased flooding and environmental degradation, especially in an area already susceptible to stormwater runoff. Residents like Martha Levene have already witnessed visible issues with drainage and standing water since early site clearing began.

    Concerns Over Process and Impact

Beyond environmental worries, community members feel excluded from the decision-making process. Michele Yendall, a nearby resident, expressed concern about the structural integrity of her property’s support wall, which has shown changes since construction started. She also noted the lack of legally required public notices prior to construction, a concern seemingly supported by a Maryland Department of the Environment report detailing violations like missing stormwater permits and environmental plans.

State Sen. Mary L. Washington, representing the district, views this situation as part of a long-standing pattern of disproportionate development burdens on East Towson. She highlighted decades of infrastructure and housing projects since the 1960s that have reshaped the community, often at the expense of its residents, including the replacement of a Negro League baseball field with a utility substation. Washington stresses that protecting these natural areas is crucial not just for the community but also for the region, as they play a role in managing stormwater and protecting waterways feeding into the Chesapeake Bay.

    Differing Perspectives on Development

The developer, Homes for America, maintains that the project followed all necessary approval channels and complied with permit requirements once notified. CEO Dana Johnson stated, “We believe that affordable housing builds community,” emphasizing the need for housing options for essential workers, seniors, and people with disabilities.

However, for many East Towson residents and advocates, the core issue isn’t the need for affordable housing itself, but rather its location and the potential cost to a community that has already endured significant loss. As Sen. Washington calls for greater public attention and environmental accountability, the fight for East Towson’s future hangs in the balance, questioning whether this historic Black community will continue to be preserved or further diminished.

  • Baltimore Welcomes Black Women for Girls’ Trips

Baltimore is rolling out the welcome mat, especially for Black women! Mayor Brandon Scott is making a special appeal for Black women to choose Charm City as their next destination for girls’ trips, festival weekends, and relaxing getaways. He emphasizes that Baltimore is a place where Black women are not only welcomed but celebrated and supported.

A Haven for Black Women Travelers

Mayor Scott understands the immense power and economic impact of Black domestic travel. Recent research shows Black travelers spend billions annually, with Black women being a significant contributor. He noted during CIAA weekend, “Black women carry the world. You need to rest.” He believes Baltimore offers the perfect blend of relaxation, delicious food like crab cakes, and a vibrant atmosphere where Black women can truly feel at home amongst their people.

Unlike some destinations that may not fully appreciate the presence and spending power of Black women, Baltimore aims to be a place where their contributions are valued. Scott stated, “We want Black women in Baltimore, because they know they all will be loved and supported here.”

    Celebrating Black Culture Year-Round

Baltimore is already a hub for Black culture, famously hosting the CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) tournament, which Scott described as a “Black family reunion.” This event alone brings millions into the city, with Black women showing up in full force, proudly representing their HBCU affiliations and enjoying the festivities.

But the celebration doesn’t stop there. Scott highlighted other key events perfect for Black women’s travel. He encouraged visits during Juneteenth weekend for a vibrant celebration and enthusiastically promoted the city’s AFRAM festival (June 19-21). This festival, free to the public, removes financial barriers and features a diverse lineup catering to all generations, from hip-hop legends like The Lox and Uncle Charlie Wilson to contemporary artists like Chloe Bailey and PJ Morton.

A Thriving Hub for Black Women Entrepreneurs

Baltimore is also home to a dynamic landscape of Black-owned businesses, many of which are owned and operated by Black women. These entrepreneurs are creating unique experiences and delicious offerings for the community. From craft cocktails and plant care education at Stem & Vine to the culinary delights of Urban Oyster and Yeiboh Kitchen, Black women are making their mark.

Jamyla Bennu’s Oyin Handmade, in partnership with Hotel Revival, ensures inclusive personal care options for tourists with natural hair and dry skin. Mayor Scott beams when discussing these entrepreneurs, recognizing them as the backbone of the city. He stressed the critical need to support Black women in business, especially in challenging economic times, stating, “We have to double down on lifting them up.”

    Supporting Black Talent and Creativity

The city also champions Black women’s creativity. Lena Waithe’s play “Trinity” recently debuted at the Baltimore Center Stage, drawing audiences from across the country. Mayor Scott emphasized, “When you talk about Baltimore, you talk about its history, you talk about who moves this city. You’re talking about Black women.”

Scott’s personal journey is a testament to the power and influence of Black women. He credits his wife, mother, grandparents, teachers, coaches, and former City Hall boss, Mayor Rollins Blake, a Black woman, for his success. His message is clear: supporting and uplifting Black women is not just a priority for Baltimore, it’s a responsibility.

  • Baltimore Officer Indicted for Striking Man with Car

A disturbing incident in Baltimore has led to serious charges against a police officer. Robert Parks, a Baltimore police officer, has been indicted after a viral video seemingly showed him hitting a Black man with his vehicle. The indictment includes multiple charges, carrying a potential prison sentence of up to 65 years if convicted on all counts.

Charges and Suspension Following Viral Video

Parks faces charges of attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first and second degrees, reckless driving, and misconduct in office. Initially suspended with pay after the video surfaced, he has now been suspended without pay following the indictment. The incident occurred on October 28th and was captured on a mobile phone, with authorities also reviewing surveillance footage from the area.

Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates described some of the reviewed videos as “disturbing,” noting that the viral clip doesn’t tell the whole story. “The charges brought forward in this indictment reflect the seriousness and dangerous nature of the actions we all witnessed in the viral video of Officer Parks driving his vehicle directly at the civilian while on duty,” Bates stated at a press conference.

    Details of the Incident Emerge

According to the indictment, Parks approached several individuals standing outside a liquor store and asked them to move. When one man began to walk away, Parks allegedly called out to him, got back into his vehicle, and then drove towards the man. The video shows the man running away as Parks pursues him, driving onto the sidewalk and across the street before crashing into the front yard of a house. Parks was then seen using his radio, presumably to call for backup.

Parks surrendered on November 12th and was released on his own recognizance the following day. The indictment details Parks’ alleged statements to the man, including threats like, “Don’t make it worse. I’m going to be straight up with you. You gotta come,” and later, “All right, I’m gonna call the dogs and come get you.”

    Accountability and Justice

The indictment signifies a serious step towards accountability for the alleged actions of Officer Parks. The community and legal system will be watching closely as the case progresses, with the potential for a lengthy prison sentence if he is found guilty of all charges.

  • Baltimore Mayor Launches $4.6M Aid Fund

In response to the ongoing government shutdown, which has now entered its 30th day, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has announced a significant aid program to support residents facing hardship. The city is allocating $4.6 million to help constituents navigate the financial challenges caused by the federal funding lapse.

    A Lifeline for Baltimore Residents

The newly established program, totaling $4,685,000, draws from a combination of fiscal year 2025 aid packages and American Rescue Plan Act funds. Mayor Scott emphasized that this initiative is crucial for helping residents cover essential needs like food, rent, and childcare. It also extends support to hospital-based violence responders whose services rely on federal funding.

This funding comes at a critical time, especially as SNAP benefits, commonly known as food stamps, are set to be affected by the shutdown by November 1. With one in eight Americans relying on these benefits for nourishment, Scott wants to assure Baltimore citizens that the city is stepping in to help bridge the gap.

    Targeted Allocations for Maximum Impact

The substantial funds are being distributed strategically. Approximately $1.7 million will go towards food assistance, benefiting organizations like the Maryland Food Bank, The Food Project, So What Else, and the Baltimore Hunger Project. This is vital for a city where nearly 12,000 federal workers call home and may be facing furloughs.

Further allocations include nearly $1 million dedicated to childcare services for impacted federal workers and another $1 million for rental and living assistance, offering a crucial safety net for those struggling to cover their housing costs. An additional $975,000 is earmarked to support hospitals involved in community violence prevention programs, ensuring the continuity of life-saving services and neighborhood safety initiatives.

    A Collaborative Effort

Mayor Scott acknowledged that city funds cannot fully replace federal support but stressed the commitment to assisting those most affected. “If nobody else got us, we have to have our own selves,” he stated, highlighting the city’s self-reliance in times of crisis. This initiative is part of a broader effort by Maryland leaders to support residents, including Governor Wes Moore’s Federal Shutdown Loan Program.

Local representatives, including Maryland Democratic Reps. Kweisi Mfume and Johnny Olszewski, have applauded Scott’s proactive measures. Mfume also voiced criticism towards the federal administration, suggesting that funds allocated elsewhere could have been better used to address critical needs like SNAP benefits.

  • Baltimore Officer Suspended After Viral Video Shows Near-Hit

A disturbing incident in Baltimore has sparked outrage and an official investigation after a viral video captured a police officer nearly hitting a Black man with his patrol car. The footage, which has circulated widely online, shows a white officer driving erratically and aggressively, leading to swift action from city officials.

    Deeply Concerning Incident Under Investigation

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has called the contents of the video “deeply concerning.” In response, the officer involved has been suspended, and a thorough investigation is now underway. “This investigation will be thorough, in accordance with all laws and regulations, to ensure proper accountability,” Mayor Scott stated, emphasizing the commitment to justice.

The video depicts the unidentified officer driving his vehicle off the street and onto an alley and grassy field in a vacant lot within the Park Heights neighborhood, an area predominantly Black. The exact circumstances leading up to the incident remain unclear, as does whether the man who narrowly avoided being struck sustained any injuries.

    Police Department’s Response

Police Commissioner Richard Worley echoed the mayor’s concerns, describing the events in the video as “disturbing, but alarming.” He stressed that this behavior is not representative of the Baltimore Police Department’s expected standards. “This is not how we expect our officers to behave, and this incident does not reflect the values or standards of the Baltimore Police Department,” Worley said.

The department is actively working to rebuild trust with the community. Commissioner Worley added, “Our department continues to work hard to rebuild trust and change the narrative of our department and our city. We remain committed to holding officers accountable for their actions and continuing the work of rebuilding trust with our community.”

    A History of Scrutiny

The Baltimore Police Department has a well-documented history of police brutality and racial discrimination, which has led to significant public outcry and federal scrutiny. Following the high-profile death of Freddie Gray in 2015, a Black man who died in police custody, the U.S. Department of Justice launched an investigation.

That investigation concluded that the department had a pattern of unconstitutional and discriminatory policing practices. A DOJ report even indicated that officers were allegedly instructed to arrest “all the Black hoodies.” These findings resulted in a court-enforceable consent decree aimed at implementing comprehensive reforms within the department, including improved training for effective community policing practices.

  • Baltimore Boys’ Inspiring Back-to-School Handshake Tradition

Imagine walking into school on your very first day, not just with a backpack, but with a powerful handshake from a respected member of your community. That’s exactly the inspiring welcome the young scholars at Baltimore Collegiate School for Boys receive each year, and it’s a tradition that’s making a real difference.

More Than Just a Greeting: A Tradition of Empowerment

This isn’t just any ‘welcome back.’ For the 11th year running, these boys are greeted by a line of engaged men from across Baltimore. It’s a handshake, yes, but it’s packed with encouragement and a clear message: the community is invested in their success before they even step into a classroom.

The ritual involves students filing past community members, including figures like City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates, each offering a firm handshake and words of affirmation. It’s a powerful way to start the academic year, setting a positive tone and building confidence from the get-go.

    Lessons in Presentation and Purpose

Baltimore Collegiate School’s CEO, Edwin Avent, highlights the importance of first impressions, stating, ‘You never get a second chance to make a first impression.’ This philosophy is woven into the handshake tradition. The boys are encouraged to present themselves well – shirts tucked, belts on, shoes polished – mirroring the professional demeanor they’ll need later in life.

Seeing these young men embody that presentation, with the support of adult role models, is a tangible lesson. It bridges the gap between school life and the wider world, showing the students that their conduct and presence are valued.

Building Futures, One Handshake at a Time

Founded in 2015, Baltimore Collegiate School for Boys is a tuition-free public charter school serving grades 4 through 8. Its core mission is to disrupt the ‘cradle-to-prison pipeline’ by providing a rigorous liberal-arts education focused on character, leadership, and critical thinking.

The school’s holistic approach blends academics with arts, debate, athletics, and advisory support. The goal is to cultivate not just successful students, but confident, self-aware community leaders ready to make a positive impact.

    The Impact of Community Connection

Each handshake is a powerful symbol. It’s a reminder that these boys are seen, valued, and capable of confidently pursuing their futures. This tradition is more than just a welcome; it’s a foundational experience that shapes their perception of themselves and their place in the community.
