Fans might be surprised to learn about the deep musical roots shared between Solange Knowles and her superstar sister, Beyoncé. Solange recently took to social media to express her gratitude to Beyoncé for giving her a chance to contribute to some of her biggest hits, particularly from the iconic “B’Day” album.
Solange’s Early Songwriting Contributions
Solange, 39, shared screenshots on X (formerly Twitter) of Beyoncé’s tracks “Upgrade U” (featuring Jay-Z) and “Get Me Bodied,” revealing that her “bars and melodies” are featured on both. She wrote, “my sistersss gave baby solo a chance and I’ll nevaaa forgetttt it.” This revelation highlights the early collaboration between the talented sisters, even before Beyoncé’s massive solo career took off.
The Knowles sisters’ collaborative history goes way back. Even before Beyoncé launched her solo career, Solange was writing music for her sister’s girl group, Destiny’s Child. She even made a memorable appearance, pregnant with her son Julez, in the music video for “Soldier.” Although she never wanted to be part of the group herself, Solange has performed with them, even stepping in for an injured backup dancer on tour.
Sisterly Support and Artistic Growth
Solange also gave a special shout-out to Kelly Rowland, Beyoncé’s former Destiny’s Child bandmate and a close family friend. Solange recalled being just 15 years old when she wrote and was featured on Rowland’s solo debut album, “Simply Deep.” She shared a video posted by their father, Matthew Knowles, showing her singing with Rowland during the album’s creation. “s/o to my big sis Kelly for hearing me writing emo jams in the back of the bus and encouraging me and trusting my lil 15 year old self to write on her debuttt, it really all started there!” Solange posted.
Beyoncé also has a writing credit on Solange’s 2002 debut album, “Solo Star.” While Solange has long been a presence in the industry, her songwriting prowess gained significant mainstream recognition following the success of her 2016 album “A Seat at the Table,” which earned her a Grammy for its lead single, “Cranes in the Sky.”
The sisters’ mutual support and creative collaboration have been a cornerstone of their careers, showcasing a powerful bond that extends from childhood jam sessions to stadium-sized performances like Beyoncé’s iconic 2019 Coachella set, famously dubbed “Beychella.”
