In a candid interview with The Sunday Times, Robert Stafford, the father of Grammy-winning artist Lil Nas X, has opened up about his son’s recent emotional breakdown and arrest. Stafford firmly believes that the immense pressure of fame, rather than drug use, was the primary catalyst for his son’s public struggles.
Fame’s Pressure, Not Drugs, Cited as Cause
Lil Nas X was arrested on August 21st in Los Angeles after being seen dancing naked in the street, an incident that escalated into a confrontation with a police officer. He was subsequently hospitalized for evaluation and charged with four felonies for allegedly injuring officers during the arrest. Stafford emphasized that drugs were not involved, attributing the meltdown to the intense pressure of maintaining career success, acting as a provider for many, and dealing with his mother’s struggles with addiction.
“I understand how the music business is,” Stafford told the publication. “It’s like a drug. When you get to that level, you want that drug again, you want to hit that high again.” Stafford shared the profound emotional impact of seeing his son behind bars, admitting he could only cry while looking through the jail glass.
A Father’s Support and Empathy
Stafford recounted the emotional moment with his son, saying, “To see my baby boy on the other side of that glass. We shed tears with each other for a minute.” He offered words of comfort, telling his son, “what you’re going through is normal. We all have breakdowns every now and then, but the difference is, yours get played out in the public eye.” Stafford acknowledged the immense burden on his 26-year-old son, who is a breadwinner for many and feels pressure to help his mother.
Despite the public nature of his struggles, Lil Nas X was reportedly remorseful. Stafford shared that his son asked him to apologize to fans for what they witnessed. Stafford believes this difficult experience could serve as a turning point for his son’s mental well-being, quoting, “Sometimes God will take you through your worst moment to give you your best moment.”
Since his release, Lil Nas X has briefly reassured fans on social media, stating he is “gonna be OK.” While the message was short, it provided some relief, showing he is aware of the concern surrounding him. Many hope he takes the necessary time to heal and reset after this very public low point.
