President Trump has publicly called for the resignation of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, following accusations of mortgage fraud leveled against her by a member of his administration. This move marks another escalation in the Trump administration’s efforts to exert influence over the central bank’s interest rate policies.
Allegations of Mortgage Fraud Surface
Bill Pulte, who directs the agency overseeing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, has urged the Justice Department to investigate Cook. Pulte alleges that Cook claimed two homes as her principal residences – one in Michigan and another in Georgia – to fraudulently secure more favorable mortgage lending terms. His letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi also noted that Cook has listed her Atlanta condo for rent, pointing out that mortgages for principal residences typically have lower interest rates than those for investment properties.
Cook, the first Black woman appointed to the Fed’s governing board by former President Joe Biden in 2022, was reappointed for a term lasting until 2038. The Federal Reserve has declined to comment on the accusations.
Trump’s Push for Lower Interest Rates
These allegations come at a time when Trump has been vocal in his demands for the Federal Reserve to cut its key interest rate, which currently stands around 4.3%. Trump believes lower rates would reduce government borrowing costs on its $37 trillion debt and stimulate the housing market. He has also been critical of Fed Chair Jerome Powell, suggesting he would only appoint individuals who support lower rates.
If Cook were to resign, it would open a vacancy on the Fed’s board, allowing Trump to nominate a replacement who aligns with his economic agenda. While replacing the Chair in May 2026 is one avenue for influence, the governing board members have a significant impact on rate decisions. Trump has previously appointed two members, Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman, who dissented on the decision to keep rates unchanged in favor of a cut. He has also appointed Stephen Miran to fill a vacancy left by Adriana Kugler.
The Trump administration has a history of making similar fraud claims against political opponents, such as Senator Adam Schiff and Attorney General Letitia James. The administration’s focus on influencing the Fed’s policy, coupled with these accusations, highlights a broader strategy to reshape economic policy according to Trump’s vision.
