  • Dr. Jessica Shepherd: Making Women’s Health Accessible

Let’s talk about making healthcare work for *you*. Meet Dr. Jessica Shepherd, a physician whose passion for education has led her to a pivotal role as Chief Medical Officer at Hers. This innovative telehealth platform is dedicated to making treatment plans more accessible, especially for women navigating the complexities of perimenopause and menopause.

    A Journey Rooted in Service

Dr. Shepherd’s path to medicine was intentional from an early age, fueled by a strong emphasis on education. After completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Oklahoma and earning her Doctor of Medicine from Ross University School of Medicine, she honed her skills through an OB/GYN residency at Drexel University College of Medicine. This foundation paved the way for her current roles.

Today, she’s not only the founder of Sanctum Med + Wellness, a concierge wellness concept based in Dallas, but also serves as the Chief Medical Officer for Hers. Since October 2024, she’s been instrumental in shaping Hers, a telehealth platform that addresses a wide range of women’s health concerns, including hair loss, weight loss, perimenopause, menopause, midlife issues, contraception, mental health, and skincare.

    Redefining Healthcare Access

What makes Hers stand out? According to their website, after completing an intake form, patients can receive free consultations from licensed providers across all 50 states and Washington D.C. These providers offer affordable, personalized treatment plans, and prescriptions can even be shipped directly. The best part? You don’t need insurance to access these services.

Dr. Shepherd shared her vision during a fireside chat at the AFROTECH™ Conference: “As chief medical officer of Hers, one thing that we strive for is to really change the scope of what we see in traditional health care… How do we allow everyone to access health care in a way that represents their life, whether that’s with convenience, flexibility, whether that’s with cost, whether that’s with not having barriers to actually getting the care that’s needed?” This approach is truly redefining decades of healthcare norms.

    Impact and Innovation at Scale

Hers is already making a significant impact, boasting over 500,000 users and reportedly on track to surpass $1 billion in revenue by 2026. Dr. Shepherd attributes this success to the platform’s “rich network of services and products” and its ability to “decrease the barriers to access to health care.”

As a Black female physician, Dr. Shepherd is particularly committed to leveraging her platform and experiences to benefit others. She sees the intersection of medicine and technology as a powerful force for innovation, stating, “I think that’s really where medicine is profound in what we’re able to aspire to as far as health care.” Her presence at AFROTECH™ highlights this crucial connection.

This pivot demonstrated that AFROTECH™ is more than just a conference; it’s a resilient ecosystem built on a people-first foundation.

The return to in-person events saw AFROTECH™ find a new home in Austin, TX, in 2022. This marked a significant growth era, with over 25,000 attendees filling the city. The conference introduced new elements like AFROTECH™ Music and the AFROTECH™ Future Awards, further bridging business, culture, and community.

Houston: A New Era of Innovation

The evolution continued in 2024 with AFROTECH™’s debut in Houston, TX. The city transformed into a vibrant hub, attracting over 37,500 attendees for four days of programming exploring the intersection of technology and culture. High-profile speakers like will.i.am, T.I., and Colin Kaepernick shared insights, fueling conversations that led to business growth and innovation.

In 2025, the momentum surged with over 40,000 attendees discussing “Building What’s Next.” The introduction of the Creator Summit, in partnership with Dream Con, further celebrated Black creativity as a global economic force. This expansion highlights AFROTECH™’s commitment to not only technology but also its role in serving the community and creating opportunities.

A Decade of Legacy and Future Dreams

  • Keith Lee’s Initiative to Aid Families Affected by SNAP Pause

In a time when many families are facing uncertainty due to the ongoing U.S. government shutdown, TikTok sensation Keith Lee is stepping up in a big way. With Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits paused as of November 5, 2025, some families are struggling to afford groceries, especially with the holidays approaching. But Lee, known for his food reviews and impactful social initiatives, has launched a powerful effort to ensure no one goes hungry.

    A Personal Mission to Help

Lee, who boasts an incredible 17.3 million followers on TikTok, is leveraging his massive platform to organize a relief initiative. He’s no stranger to hardship himself; he candidly shared that when he first started on TikTok, he posted videos of meals he made using food stamps and gift cards he’d received from others. This personal experience fuels his deep empathy for those currently struggling.

He explained in a TikTok video, “How was I buying that food to make meals for the less fortunate? On food stamps and gift cards that people was giving me.” Lee has always been open about managing his social anxiety by preparing meals and distributing food to those in need, making this initiative a natural extension of his core values.

A Call to Action for Brands

Lee has issued a heartfelt call to action, urging brands he’s worked with and others to join him in providing free meals. He’s made it clear that this initiative is not about personal gain; he explicitly stated, “I refuse to take any money. I don’t want no money. I don’t want no nothing.” His focus is solely on supporting families and ensuring children have a happy holiday season.

The response has been overwhelming. Since his initial video, over 40 major brands, including DoorDash, and more than 60 smaller businesses have reached out, eager to partner with Lee. This outpouring of support highlights the impact of his platform and his genuine commitment to making a difference.

    Logistics and Personal Connection

Lee, who recently relocated to Dallas, plans to host local meet-ups where families can collect donated products. He’s also working on establishing a warehouse to store incoming donations before they are distributed. This hands-on approach ensures that the aid reaches those who need it most effectively.

He emphasized that needing SNAP benefits is not uncommon and shared his own experience: “When my first and second daughters were born, we was on food stamps. And I vividly remember exactly what it feels like.” This personal connection resonates deeply and underscores the importance of community support during challenging times.

  • Space Continuum & NEURA Robotics Launch Humanoid Robots

Get ready for the future! Space Continuum, a Black-owned design and operations firm, is making major waves in the tech world. Led by President Joshua Johnson, they’ve just launched ContinuumX.ai, their dedicated technology division, with a bold mission: to deploy cutting-edge robotics and AI solutions across key sectors like healthcare, education, hospitality, and manufacturing.

    A Partnership Focused on Humanity

The driving force behind this innovation is a strategic partnership with NEURA Robotics. Johnson emphasizes that this collaboration is a natural fit because NEURA Robotics shares a similar vision: using robotics as a tool to *collaborate* with humans, not replace them. This approach is crucial, especially in industries facing labor shortages.

“We also need to identify where there’s a labor shortage in some of these industries, as far as manufacturing, especially in healthcare,” Johnson explained. “That’s where NEURA Robotics and us has seen where we serve humanity… The great thing about our product is the sensoring that actually makes it really safe to work hand in hand.”

    Meet MiPA: The Multipurpose Assistant

One of the exciting products born from this partnership is MiPA, a versatile multipurpose assistant. Imagine a robot that can handle repetitive tasks like delivering meal trays, cooking, folding laundry, and doing dishes. MiPA is designed to do just that, offering invaluable support in personal care settings. It can also recognize voices and gestures and integrate with wearable tech, making it a smart companion for caregivers.

This technology couldn’t come at a more critical time, especially with the projected nursing shortage. By 2023, the U.S. was expected to need 1.2 million nurses to support the aging baby boomer generation, many of whom require in-home healthcare. Johnson sees robots like MiPA as a vital solution, extending the quality of life for seniors and easing the burden on healthcare systems, particularly in rural areas.

4NE1: The Cognitive Humanoid Robot for Industry

Beyond healthcare, the partnership introduces 4NE1, a cognitive humanoid robot designed to automate manufacturing processes. This robot can handle tasks like machine tending, quality inspection, and material handling, adapting to different environments with advanced control and human-robot collaboration. As Johnson puts it, 4NE1 is “pretty much the future of humanoid robots,” featuring legs, arms, and fingers capable of complex actions.

Both MiPA and 4NE1 are also being developed with capabilities to tutor students in subjects like math and reading, and assist with security protocols by patrolling areas and sending notifications. Johnson emphasizes that these advancements are designed to be accessible and easy to adapt, aiming to demystify humanoid robots for the public.

Empowering Businesses and the Next Generation

Johnson is particularly focused on ensuring that small to medium-sized businesses aren’t left behind. He wants to foster open conversations about implementing these technologies, helping businesses make informed investments to scale and thrive in this new technological era. “Let’s have a little bit more healthy conversation so we can create these solutions and talk about them so they can make the right investments and be able to scale their business and continue to operate in the new era of technology,” he urged.

Furthermore, Johnson is passionate about exposing youth in minority communities to robotics education. Plans are underway to launch robotics labs in school systems, starting with Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and aiming for nationwide expansion. This initiative seeks to provide crucial exposure to future technologies, ensuring that the next generation is equipped for the evolving job market.

  • Phone Habits: From Memorization to Voice Notes

Remember a time when you actually had to memorize phone numbers? It feels like a lifetime ago, doesn’t it? Since Alexander Graham Bell patented the first telephone in 1876, our communication habits have undergone a radical transformation. Many old ways of connecting have faded into history, while new, sometimes surprising, trends have emerged.

The End of Memorization and 411

Back in the day, without smartphones to store contacts, memorizing key phone numbers was a crucial skill. Even the seven-digit phone number system was designed with memory recall in mind, as psychologist George Miller noted in 1956 that seven was a manageable number for most people to remember. Today, with all our contacts neatly saved on our devices, the need to memorize has all but vanished. A study found that only about 7% of young adults (18-24) can recall 2-5 phone numbers, compared to over 17% of those aged 55-85.

And who remembers calling 411? Before the internet, this was the go-to for looking up phone numbers, either by speaking to an operator or consulting the ubiquitous Yellow Pages. But as smartphones put instant access to information at our fingertips, services like 411 became obsolete, with AT&T officially discontinuing it in 2023.

Landlines and Business Cards: A Surprising Comeback?

With smartphones dominating our lives – over 70% of Americans rely solely on cellphones – landlines seemed destined for extinction. However, they’re making a niche comeback. Businesses still widely use them, and CNET suggests keeping corded phones handy for widespread service outages. Even more surprisingly, Gen Z is embracing landlines as a “nostalgia design trend,” adding them to their homes for a retro aesthetic.

Exchanging contact information has also evolved. Instead of jotting down numbers or carrying stacks of business cards, people now opt to scan cards directly into their phones using various apps. It’s a much more efficient way to keep track of professional connections.

The Rise of Voice Notes and Flip Phones

Interestingly, many people are now avoiding phone calls altogether. A Uswitch study revealed that nearly 25% of adults aged 18-34 never answer the phone, citing concerns about spam, being too busy, or simply not wanting to be interrupted. Instead, voice notes have become a popular alternative.

And in a truly unexpected twist, the humble flip phone is making a comeback! Once replaced by more advanced devices, sales of these “brick phones” have surged by 148% among Gen Z consumers between 2021 and 2024. It seems the simplicity and durability of older phone models are appealing to a new generation.

Modern Phone Etiquette and Phone Booths

Our expectations around phone usage have also shifted. Modern phone etiquette suggests forgetting about leaving voicemails, sending a text before calling, and avoiding calling someone repeatedly if they don’t pick up. Using speakerphone in public is also a major faux pas.

Even phone booths are reappearing, but with a modern twist! Offices and coworking spaces are installing them to provide private, distraction-free spaces for calls, enhancing focus and privacy. Some homeowners are even adding them for a touch of nostalgia.

    The Ever-Evolving World of Phones

Technology advances at lightning speed, and our phone habits are constantly evolving alongside it. What seems normal today might be considered bizarre to future generations. As we navigate these changes, it’s fascinating to see how our methods of communication continue to adapt and reinvent themselves.

What phone habits from the past do you miss, or what new trends have you embraced? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

  • AI Video Sparks Outrage Over SNAP Fraud Depiction

Artificial intelligence is evolving at lightning speed, and while it offers incredible potential, it also presents new challenges. OpenAI’s latest video generation model, Sora 2, is once again in the spotlight, but this time for a deeply concerning misuse. A video created using the AI depicts a Black woman allegedly selling food stamps for cash, sparking outrage and raising serious questions about AI’s role in spreading misinformation and harmful stereotypes.

Sora 2: A Tool for Creation, Now a Source of Controversy

OpenAI touts Sora 2 as a system capable of generating “accurate, realistic, and more controllable” video scenes from text prompts. While this technology holds promise for creative industries, it has also been exploited to create problematic content. We’ve seen this before when users generated disrespectful depictions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., prompting OpenAI to strengthen its guardrails for historical figures.

Now, the controversy centers on a video showing an AI-generated Black woman claiming to sell $2,500 a month in food stamps for $1,200-$1,500 in cash. The video, which gained significant traction online before being deleted from TikTok, plays into harmful stereotypes about welfare recipients and SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) fraud.

    Fueling Misinformation and Stereotypes

This incident comes at a particularly sensitive time, with millions of Americans facing potential loss of food stamp benefits due to government shutdowns. The fabricated narrative of widespread SNAP fraud, which is statistically rare according to reports, can have real-world consequences, potentially influencing public opinion and policy decisions.

Social media commentary surrounding the video often reflects these harmful stereotypes. One user commented, “This [isn’t] about feeding their kids this [is] about getting their hair and nails done,” while a right-wing influencer called it an “absolute SCAM.” These reactions highlight how AI-generated content, even when fictional, can reinforce existing biases and prejudices against underserved communities.

The Broader Impact of AI-Generated Content

The misuse of AI tools like Sora 2 to create racist and stereotypical depictions is a growing concern. It underscores the urgent need for robust ethical guidelines and stronger safeguards to prevent the spread of misinformation and protect vulnerable groups from further marginalization. As AI technology advances, so too must our efforts to ensure it is used responsibly and ethically.

What are your thoughts on the misuse of AI like Sora 2? How can we combat AI-generated misinformation? Share your views in the comments below!
