  • Full Ride Scholarships for Black Men in Medicine

Imagine pursuing a career in medicine without the crushing weight of student debt. That dream is becoming a reality for young Black men thanks to an incredible initiative by Tennessee State University (TSU) and Meharry Medical College. They’re offering full-ride scholarships to aspiring physicians and dentists, aiming to boost representation in the medical field.

Honoring a Medical Pioneer: The Dr. Levi Watkins Jr. Scholarship

This groundbreaking scholarship fund is named in honor of the late Dr. Levi Watkins Jr., a distinguished TSU alumnus and cardiac surgeon. Dr. Watkins made history with the first internal defibrillator implantation, a true revolution in medicine. This endowment seeks to continue his legacy by removing financial obstacles that often deter talented underrepresented students from pursuing advanced medical careers.

The goal is to streamline the educational path. Instead of the traditional eight-year route, scholars can complete their pre-med studies at TSU in three years and then transition to a four-year program at Meharry Medical College, Sidney Kimmel Medical College, or the Frist College of Medicine. This accelerated seven-year curriculum means less time and money spent on education.

Who Qualifies for This Amazing Opportunity?

The applicant pool is currently quite small, meaning this is a fantastic opportunity for high-achieving students! To be eligible for the Dr. Levi Watkins Jr. Endowed Scholarship, you need to be passionate about the medical field. You’ll also need to meet some specific academic benchmarks:

    • Minimum GPA of 3.5
    • ACT score of 28 or an SAT score of 1300

This scholarship isn’t just about covering tuition; it’s about investing in the whole professional journey. Funds also support crucial elements like the White Coat Ceremony and specialized physician shadowing, helping scholars build their professional identity from day one.

    Proven Success and Future Impact

The impact of this scholarship is already evident. Scholars have been able to dedicate themselves fully to their rigorous coursework, leading to a remarkable 61% increase in the Biology Department’s graduation rate at TSU. In fact, the inaugural cohort produced the university’s top two graduates in 2024, both achieving perfect 4.0 GPAs!

This initiative is more than just financial aid; it’s a strategic investment in diversifying the future of medicine and ensuring that talented young Black men have the resources they need to succeed. It’s a powerful step towards greater equity in healthcare.

Are you or someone you know a high-achieving young Black man interested in medicine? Learn more about the Dr. Levi Watkins Jr. Scholarship and share this incredible opportunity!

  • Spike Lee’s Education Funded by Grandmother’s Sacrifice

Spike Lee, the acclaimed Academy Award-winning director, owes a significant part of his educational foundation to the profound sacrifice of his grandmother, Zimmie Retha Shelton. Her dedication to his future meant she diligently saved her Social Security checks to fund his studies at the prestigious Morehouse College.

A Foundation Built on Art and Sacrifice

Lee often credits his mother and grandmother for nurturing his creative spirit from a young age. His mother, a cinephile herself, ensured her children were exposed to the arts through Broadway plays, museums, and libraries, laying the groundwork for his future in filmmaking. This early exposure to culture was instrumental in shaping his artistic sensibilities.

While Lee began his Morehouse College journey in 1975, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, his academic path wasn’t initially clear. He described himself as a C and D student and hadn’t declared a major. The situation became even more challenging during his sophomore year when his mother, Jacqueline, tragically passed away from liver cancer.

The summer of 1977 proved to be a turning point for Lee. Broke and without summer jobs, he discovered a Super 8 camera at a friend’s house. This discovery ignited his passion for filmmaking, leading him to spend the entire summer documenting New York City, including the infamous blackout and its aftermath. This project became his first short film, ‘Last Hustle in Brooklyn,’ which caught the attention of a teacher at Clark Atlanta University.

    Grandmother’s Enduring Support

Throughout his time at Morehouse, Lee relied heavily on the financial support of his grandmother, Zimmie Retha Shelton. A former art teacher in Georgia for 50 years, she made immense personal sacrifices. ‘For 50 years, she saved the social security checks for her grandchildren’s education… She put me through Morehouse,’ Lee shared, highlighting the depth of her commitment.

Sadly, Zimmie Retha Shelton passed away in 2006 at the remarkable age of 100. Her sacrifices, however, were far from in vain. Spike Lee went on to create a remarkable body of work, including iconic films like ‘Do the Right Thing,’ ‘Inside Man,’ and ‘Malcolm X,’ solidifying his legacy in cinema.

His dedication to his craft continues, with his latest project, ‘Highest 2 Lowest,’ a crime thriller starring A$AP Rocky and Denzel Washington, marking his fifth collaboration with the acclaimed actor.

    Understanding Membership and Traditions

While the culture is vibrant and often publicly celebrated through events like step shows and strolls, the membership education process and rituals are intentionally private. It’s important to celebrate the public artistry while respecting the sacredness of these traditions. Eligibility for membership typically includes specific GPA, credit-hour, and service requirements, often announced at interest meetings known as ‘rush’.

Membership intake processes should always follow official chapter communications, and universities, along with NPHC organizations, strictly enforce anti-hazing policies. It’s also worth noting that membership isn’t limited to undergraduates; many join after college through local alumni chapters. Service remains a cornerstone, with campus and community service, study hours, and leadership roles deeply ingrained in the culture.
