Morehouse Student Arrested After Strangling Video Surfaces

A disturbing incident has sent shockwaves through the Atlanta University Center (AUC) community after a video showing a Morehouse student strangling a Clark Atlanta University (CAU) student went viral. The Morehouse student has since been arrested following the altercation that occurred on a Georgia State University bus.

Escalation on Public Transit

The confrontation reportedly began when the Morehouse student and his girlfriend were seated next to the CAU student on the bus. When the victim shifted her position due to their public display of affection, the situation escalated. As the CAU student prepared to exit the bus, she claims the Morehouse student stepped on her foot.

Tensions reportedly flared when the Morehouse student refused to apologize. The victim then engaged in an argument with his girlfriend, which the boyfriend escalated by physically intervening. The viral video captures the shocking moment the young man grabbed the CAU student by the neck, appearing to strangle her while reportedly issuing death threats.

Institutional Responses and Backlash

Following the incident and the video’s widespread circulation, both Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University issued statements. However, Morehouse’s initial statement, which described the assault as an “off-campus incident,” drew significant criticism from the AUC community. Many felt the language downplayed the severity of the student’s violent actions and threats.

Critics argued that labeling the event as merely “disappointing” was insufficient, especially given the clear display of violence and threats against a fellow AUC student. Upset commenters expressed that the focus should be on protecting students, particularly Black women who often face violence and feel unheard, rather than protecting the institution’s brand.

Apologies and Renewed Commitments

In response to the backlash, Morehouse College’s President, Dr. F. DuBois Bowman, and the Student Government Association (SGA) released follow-up apologies. President Bowman unequivocally stated, “Whether physical, verbal, or written, violence or threats of violence have no place in the Morehouse community, particularly violence against women.” The SGA echoed this sentiment, reaffirming their commitment to advocating for the safety and dignity of all women, especially Black women, and promoting a culture of respect.

While the student’s identity has been kept private due to privacy policies, police have confirmed his arrest. The criminal investigation into the matter is ongoing, and the university has yet to confirm if the student remains enrolled. Calls for expulsion have been widespread, emphasizing the need for accountability and a zero-tolerance policy for violence within the AUC.
