Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton has issued a forceful response to Donald Trump’s repeated threats to deploy federal troops to Chicago, dismissing his plan as unwelcome and unconstitutional. “We do not want your circus here,” Stratton declared in an interview with theGrio, emphasizing that Chicago does not want federalized troops marching through its streets and instilling fear.
Rejecting Trump’s ‘Circus’ in Chicago
Stratton, who is also running for U.S. Senate in 2026, directly challenged Trump’s claims that Chicagoans support his proposed military intervention. As a lifelong Chicagoan and a Black woman living on the South Side, she stated, “the Black women and families that I know in this city and that I speak to every day are not asking for soldiers parading our streets and instilling fear in our communities.” She added that they are “not asking to be treated like pawns in Trump’s political games.”
While Trump initially suggested a military deployment to Chicago was imminent, he later softened his tone, stating his administration was “making a determination.” He also mentioned potentially deploying troops to New Orleans, praising Governor Jeff Landry’s willingness to accept federal assistance. This contrasts with Chicago’s leadership, including Mayor Brandon Johnson, who have vehemently opposed Trump’s threats.
Legality and Constitutional Concerns
Stratton pointed to a federal court ruling in California that deemed Trump’s military deployment in Los Angeles illegal, noting that unlike Washington D.C. (which is under federal jurisdiction), the National Guard requires a state governor’s approval for deployment. “If he’s waiting to be asked, I can tell you he’s not going to be asked by us to come because we don’t want him here,” Stratton stated unequivocally.
She expressed concern that Trump, whom she called a “wannabe dictator,” disregards the law and court rulings. Stratton argued that deploying troops would be both illegal and unconstitutional, a sentiment reinforced by the California court’s decision. She believes Trump’s actions are an attempt to seize power and target cities led by Black Democratic officials.
Focusing on Real Community Needs
Stratton suggested that if Trump genuinely cared about Chicago’s concerns, he would focus on restoring federal funding for essential programs like healthcare, food assistance, and education, which she claims his administration has cut. She also criticized the rollback of $800 million in community violence prevention funding, highlighting its proven success in reducing crime rates in cities nationwide.
Furthermore, Stratton warned that Trump’s alleged cruelty and divisive tactics, often seen targeting Latino communities with immigration policies, could extend to other groups. She urged Black, Latino, and all communities who oppose Trump’s policies to unite against his “hate-fueled operation.” “As he tries to pit us against each other, we’re going to stand strong,” she vowed. “[We must] make it very clear that there are no kings in Chicago or in Illinois or anywhere in America.”
