In a move that reflects a broader trend in the tech industry, Cloudflare has announced substantial job cuts. The global cloud infrastructure and cybersecurity company is laying off more than 1,100 employees worldwide. This significant workforce reduction comes as companies increasingly integrate artificial intelligence into their operations.
Restructuring for the ‘Agentic AI Era’
Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince and co-founder Michelle Zatlyn shared the news in a blog post on May 7, 2026. They explained that the company is undergoing a strategic restructuring of its teams and workflows to align with what they’ve termed the “agentic AI era.” This means reimagining internal processes and roles across the board.
The company had approximately 5,156 employees at the end of 2025. These layoffs represent about a 20% reduction in their global workforce. Cloudflare anticipates incurring charges between $140 million and $150 million in the second quarter related to these changes.
Not About Performance, But Reimagining Operations
Prince and Zatlyn were keen to emphasize that this decision is not a reflection of individual employee performance or short-term financial difficulties. Instead, it’s a proactive step to redefine how a high-growth company operates and creates value in an AI-driven future. They stressed that the goal is to optimize for the “agentic AI era.”
The impact of AI within Cloudflare is already substantial. The company reported a more than 600% increase in its internal use of AI tools over the past three months. Employees across various departments, from engineering to marketing, are reportedly using AI agents daily to streamline tasks.
Support for Departing Employees
Cloudflare stated its commitment to treating departing employees with empathy and providing robust support. Affected team members will receive severance packages that include full base pay through the end of 2026. U.S.-based employees will also continue to have healthcare coverage until the year’s end.
Furthermore, laid-off employees will retain their vesting equity through August 15th. For those who haven’t reached their one-year vesting cliff, this requirement will be waived, and they will receive prorated equity through August. Cloudflare opted for broad cuts now to provide clarity for those leaving and stability for the remaining workforce.
The Growing Impact of AI on the Job Market
These layoffs at Cloudflare add to a growing list of companies grappling with the implications of AI on employment. In 2025 alone, AI was a factor in over 48,000 U.S. layoffs across major tech firms like Microsoft, Amazon, and HP. As AI capabilities expand, industries are being reshaped, leading to significant shifts in the job market.
Cloudflare reiterated its commitment to its core mission of building a better internet, emphasizing that substantial work remains. They expressed deep respect and gratitude for the contributions of the departing employees, wishing them success in their future endeavors.
