A terrifying scene unfolded at Denver International Airport (DIA) late Friday night when a Frontier Airlines flight experienced a catastrophic event just as it was preparing for takeoff. Instead of soaring towards Los Angeles, Flight 4345 was forced into a sudden, emergency stop.
A Deadly Encounter on the Tarmac
Around 11:00 p.m., as the Airbus A321 was accelerating down Runway 17L, pilots realized with horror that someone was on the active runway. The chilling audio from air traffic control captured the pilot’s immediate reaction: “Tower, Frontier 4345, we’re stopping on the runway. Uh, we just hit somebody… we have an engine fire.”
Tragically, the impact was severe. Reports indicate the individual was struck at high speed and was “at least partially consumed” by one of the engines. This devastating collision is what led to the engine catching fire and smoke filling the cabin, alarming the 224 passengers and 7 crew members onboard.
How Did This Happen?
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that the individual was not authorized to be in the vicinity of the tarmac. Preliminary reports suggest the person scaled a perimeter fence and deliberately entered the runway. The NTSB has been notified, and Runway 17L has been closed as investigations are underway.
Frontier Airlines is cooperating fully with authorities to understand how their security protocols were breached. A spokesperson stated, “We are investigating this incident and gathering more information in coordination with the airport and other safety authorities. We are deeply saddened by this event.”
A Day of Shock and Sadness
