In a move that has the internet in an uproar, beauty influencer James Charles is being heavily criticized for his reaction to a former Spirit Airlines employee who reached out for financial assistance. Following Spirit Airlines’ bankruptcy filing and subsequent mass layoffs, one employee, now jobless, turned to Charles for help.
A Mocking Response to a Plea for Help
Instead of offering empathy or simply ignoring the message, Charles reportedly recorded a video mocking the woman’s situation. He read her direct message aloud in a sarcastic tone, which detailed her job loss and included a GoFundMe link. Charles then proceeded to offer unsolicited “career advice.”
He suggested she try “getting another job” and accused her of being a “lazy piece of sāt” and entitled for expecting influencers to fund her life. Charles seemed more bothered by the fact that the fan didn’t follow him on social media than by her financial distress, implying that support might have been offered if she were a genuine fan.
Lack of Empathy Sparks Outrage
Charles went on to state that he wouldn’t help her, emphasizing that people lose their jobs every day and that she was in a better position than many others because she is “white, pretty, and able-bodied.” He even suggested he might only help someone with a “rare genetic disease,” implying unemployment wasn’t a valid reason to ask for support.
Although Charles deleted the video, screenshots and screen recordings have circulated widely online, leading to widespread condemnation. Many are calling his response “tasteless,” “cruel,” and out of touch, especially given his own wealth. The incident has reignited discussions about the perceived lack of grace and empathy within influencer culture.
