Vivica A. Fox & Erika Alexander on ‘Is God Is’

Get ready to dive into the intense world of ‘Is God Is,’ a powerful film that’s making waves. This story isn’t just about revenge; it’s a deep exploration of how trauma, survival, and grief can echo through generations. At the heart of it are two incredible actresses, Vivica A. Fox and Erika Alexander, who bring to life complex women grappling with a shared, painful past.

Portraying Women Shaped by Pain

Vivica A. Fox steps into the role of Ruby, the mother of the film’s central twins, often referred to as “God.” Confined and visibly scarred, Ruby is the catalyst for the revenge plot, summoning her daughters to confront the man who shattered their family. For Fox, known for different kinds of roles, this was a chance to explore uncharted territory.

“Playing a domestic violence victim was totally different for me,” Fox shared. She embraced the physical transformation, including extensive prosthetics, to embody Ruby’s pain. The impact was so profound that even upon seeing the trailer, many were surprised, exclaiming, “Oh my God, is that Vivica?”

Erika Alexander’s Character: A Healer’s Struggle

Erika Alexander portrays Divine, a healer who remains emotionally entangled with the abusive father figure. Divine represents a character caught between unwavering belief and painful denial, still holding onto hope despite repeated failures. Alexander found a deeper purpose in her character and the world crafted by director Aleshea Harris.

Alexander spoke highly of Harris’s transition from playwright to filmmaker, noting her natural talent and strong vision on set. “Some people are made for the moment, but she was born to do this,” Alexander remarked, celebrating a Black woman expanding her storytelling from stage to screen with such command.

A Collaborative and Powerful Set

The collaborative spirit on set was palpable. Despite the film’s heavy themes of violence and trauma, the cast developed a strong bond while filming in New Orleans. Fox described it as a “high school reunion,” where egos were left at the door, and everyone was dedicated to delivering a powerful performance for director Aleshea Harris.

The film masterfully balances realism with heightened emotion, showcasing how Ruby, Divine, and Angie (played by Janelle Monáe) respond differently to the destructive force that impacted their lives. Each woman carries her own unique scars, both visible and internal, as they fight to reclaim their lives.
