Well, it’s a significant legal blow for Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs. A New York judge has thrown out his massive $100 million defamation lawsuit against NBCUniversal, Peacock, and Ample LLC concerning the documentary ‘Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy.’
Judge Dismisses All Claims in Defamation Suit
The documentary, which premiered on Peacock on January 2, 2025, faced accusations from Combs that it caused substantial reputational and financial damage. He specifically took issue with claims linking him to the deaths of notable figures like Kim Porter, The Notorious B.I.G., Heavy D, and Andre Harrell, as well as an alleged attempted murder involving Al B. Sure!.
Combs also challenged statements from an interviewee that accused him of sexual misconduct, including allegations involving minors and secret recordings. However, Judge Phaedra F. Perry-Bond ultimately ruled that the media companies did not meet the legal threshold for defamation.
Court Finds Documentary Presented Multiple Perspectives
Judge Perry-Bond highlighted that the documentary presented a range of perspectives rather than pushing a single narrative. The film also included factual context and counterpoints, such as official reports detailing the causes of death for individuals mentioned. For instance, it cited a coroner’s report stating Kim Porter died of lobar pneumonia and autopsy findings for Heavy D (pulmonary embolism) and Andre Harrell (heart failure).
Furthermore, the judge noted that Combs’ reputation had already been impacted by numerous factors prior to the documentary’s release, including existing lawsuits, viral footage, extensive media coverage, and a criminal indictment. Because of this, the court found it unlikely that the documentary alone caused any additional, measurable harm.
The documentary demonstrates a carefully curated and nuanced approach, allowing viewers to form their own conclusions based on a range of viewpoints. — Judge Perry-Bond
