Amethyst Davis on ‘The Gray House’ & Southern Roots

In honor of International Black Women’s History Month, we’re spotlighting incredible Black women making waves across various industries. Today, we’re diving into the world of entertainment with actress Amethyst Davis, who is captivating audiences as Mary Jane Richards in Prime Video’s compelling historical drama, ‘The Gray House’.

Bringing Authenticity to ‘The Gray House’

Executive produced by legends Morgan Freeman and Kevin Costner, ‘The Gray House’ sheds light on the often-overlooked stories of women in the Confederate South who secretly aided the Union as spies during the Civil War. Amethyst Davis steps into the powerful role of Mary Jane Richards, a formerly enslaved woman who returns from Liberia and becomes a vital part of this espionage ring.

Mary Jane is portrayed as an intelligent, confident, and well-traveled individual who played a crucial role in shaping history – a testament to the many hidden Black women figures of the past. Davis embraces this story with pride, drawing heavily on her own Southern roots from South Carolina to infuse the character with authenticity and accuracy.

Southern Roots and a Dream Role

For Davis, playing a real historical figure was always a dream. “I have always thought I wanted to play a real person,” she shared in an exclusive interview with HelloBeautiful. “These stories deserve honor and dignity, and somebody like me, who’s from America, that’s from the South… I just felt like, why not me? Why am I not the person to tell this story?” Her deep connection to the South, with all four of her grandparents hailing from the region, provided a unique foundation for her performance.

The journey to landing the role involved a rigorous audition process. Davis, who had an agent in Atlanta, initially auditioned for smaller roles but eventually got a callback for the lead. “I was like, ‘oh, they’re probably not gonna pick me, but hey, let’s have fun, let’s put this on tape’,” she recalled. Impressing the producers with her talent and authenticity, she secured the role, ready to bring Mary Jane’s story to life.

Connecting with Mary Jane’s Experience

Davis found a profound connection between her character’s experiences and her own life as a Black woman. “Unfortunately, being a Black woman and people judge you today, still,” she explained. She drew parallels to her time in the military and other male-dominated environments where she had to constantly prove herself, much like Mary Jane had to navigate a dangerous world where her intelligence and freedom were constantly questioned.

The scene where Mary Jane is asked for her freedom papers and reveals she can read particularly resonated with Davis. She reflected on the historical context – how dangerous it was for enslaved people to be educated – and contrasted it with the present day, where Black women are one of the most educated groups. “I see why they were trying to hold us back… I see why they were trying to hold us back, not saying they should be scared, but I see,” Davis mused.

The Impact of Leading Roles and Industry Support

Having executive producers like Morgan Freeman and Kevin Costner involved was instrumental. Davis expressed immense gratitude, stating, “because of them executive producing this, this is why new faces can be on TV.” She believes their involvement allowed the casting team to prioritize talent and authenticity, opening doors for actors like herself who may not have had extensive industry recognition.

While this is her first leading role, Davis notes that the groundwork was laid prior to the show’s release. Having secured an LA manager and auditioned for more lead roles in the two years since filming, she’s already experiencing the career advancements that come with such a significant project. “It’s like, ‘oh, now you’re in rooms that you weren’t in before’,” she said, acknowledging the increased competition but embracing the challenge.

A Legacy Role

For Amethyst Davis, being a part of telling Mary Jane Richards’s story is more than just another role; it’s a legacy. “I feel really blessed to have this in my body of work,” she stated. “If I don’t do anything else, at least I was Mary Jane Richards. Nobody can take that from me.”
