  • Amethyst Davis on ‘The Gray House’ & Southern Roots

In honor of International Black Women’s History Month, we’re spotlighting incredible Black women making waves across various industries. Today, we’re diving into the world of entertainment with actress Amethyst Davis, who is captivating audiences as Mary Jane Richards in Prime Video’s compelling historical drama, ‘The Gray House’.

Bringing Authenticity to ‘The Gray House’

Executive produced by legends Morgan Freeman and Kevin Costner, ‘The Gray House’ sheds light on the often-overlooked stories of women in the Confederate South who secretly aided the Union as spies during the Civil War. Amethyst Davis steps into the powerful role of Mary Jane Richards, a formerly enslaved woman who returns from Liberia and becomes a vital part of this espionage ring.

Mary Jane is portrayed as an intelligent, confident, and well-traveled individual who played a crucial role in shaping history – a testament to the many hidden Black women figures of the past. Davis embraces this story with pride, drawing heavily on her own Southern roots from South Carolina to infuse the character with authenticity and accuracy.

Southern Roots and a Dream Role

For Davis, playing a real historical figure was always a dream. “I have always thought I wanted to play a real person,” she shared in an exclusive interview with HelloBeautiful. “These stories deserve honor and dignity, and somebody like me, who’s from America, that’s from the South… I just felt like, why not me? Why am I not the person to tell this story?” Her deep connection to the South, with all four of her grandparents hailing from the region, provided a unique foundation for her performance.

The journey to landing the role involved a rigorous audition process. Davis, who had an agent in Atlanta, initially auditioned for smaller roles but eventually got a callback for the lead. “I was like, ‘oh, they’re probably not gonna pick me, but hey, let’s have fun, let’s put this on tape’,” she recalled. Impressing the producers with her talent and authenticity, she secured the role, ready to bring Mary Jane’s story to life.

    Connecting with Mary Jane’s Experience

Davis found a profound connection between her character’s experiences and her own life as a Black woman. “Unfortunately, being a Black woman and people judge you today, still,” she explained. She drew parallels to her time in the military and other male-dominated environments where she had to constantly prove herself, much like Mary Jane had to navigate a dangerous world where her intelligence and freedom were constantly questioned.

The scene where Mary Jane is asked for her freedom papers and reveals she can read particularly resonated with Davis. She reflected on the historical context – how dangerous it was for enslaved people to be educated – and contrasted it with the present day, where Black women are one of the most educated groups. “I see why they were trying to hold us back… I see why they were trying to hold us back, not saying they should be scared, but I see,” Davis mused.

The Impact of Leading Roles and Industry Support

Having executive producers like Morgan Freeman and Kevin Costner involved was instrumental. Davis expressed immense gratitude, stating, “because of them executive producing this, this is why new faces can be on TV.” She believes their involvement allowed the casting team to prioritize talent and authenticity, opening doors for actors like herself who may not have had extensive industry recognition.

While this is her first leading role, Davis notes that the groundwork was laid prior to the show’s release. Having secured an LA manager and auditioned for more lead roles in the two years since filming, she’s already experiencing the career advancements that come with such a significant project. “It’s like, ‘oh, now you’re in rooms that you weren’t in before’,” she said, acknowledging the increased competition but embracing the challenge.

    A Legacy Role

For Amethyst Davis, being a part of telling Mary Jane Richards’s story is more than just another role; it’s a legacy. “I feel really blessed to have this in my body of work,” she stated. “If I don’t do anything else, at least I was Mary Jane Richards. Nobody can take that from me.”

  • Morgan Freeman: Still Seeking the Perfect Role?

Imagine a voice so iconic it could narrate the universe, and a presence so commanding it instantly elevates any film. That’s Morgan Freeman for you. For decades, he was the undisputed king of prestige cinema, delivering unforgettable performances that defined an era. But as he approaches his 90th birthday, the legendary actor reveals he’s still on the hunt for that one perfect role.

From Blockbuster King to Quieter Productions

From the late 80s through the early 2000s, Morgan Freeman was a constant fixture on the big screen. He was the go-to actor for powerful supporting roles, appearing in one Oscar contender after another. Think about it – his filmography from that period is stacked! However, his mainstream Hollywood presence has noticeably shifted. While he hasn’t disappeared, his recent work has leaned more towards straight-to-video releases that don’t quite capture the cultural zeitgeist like his earlier classics.

The Impact of Controversy and Shifting Industry Focus

Some speculate that the 2018 sexual harassment allegations may have marked a turning point. Freeman himself spoke about the potential threat to his legacy and career. Although no formal charges were filed and his lifetime achievement award wasn’t revoked, the timing does align with his move away from major studio projects. It leads one to wonder if Hollywood quietly shifted its focus, leaving the veteran actor in a different lane.

A Continued Passion for the Craft

Despite the change in visibility, Morgan Freeman is far from retired. He’s continued to work steadily, albeit in lower-profile productions. These roles might not be generating Oscar buzz, but they clearly demonstrate a veteran actor who still cherishes the craft of acting. After more than six decades in front of the camera, his extensive body of work remains a towering achievement, filled with performances that have resonated across generations.

Whether you remember him for his wisdom, his gravitas, or his unforgettable voice, Morgan Freeman’s impact on Hollywood is undeniable. His presence brought an unparalleled level of authority and emotional depth to every character. Even as the industry evolves, his contributions to film history are permanently etched, standing as one of the most respected careers an actor could achieve.

  • Morgan Freeman Slams AI Voice Cloning

The iconic voice of Morgan Freeman, instantly recognizable from countless films and documentaries, is now at the center of a debate about artificial intelligence. The legendary actor is publicly denouncing the unauthorized use of AI to clone his voice, calling it a violation of his rights and a form of theft.

    A Violation of His Craft

At 88 years old, Freeman’s distinctive voice has been a cornerstone of his career, lending gravitas to roles in classics like ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘Driving Miss Daisy,’ as well as his acclaimed narration in ‘March of the Penguins.’ He expressed his frustration, stating, ‘I’m a little PO’d, you know. I’m like any other actor: don’t mimic me with falseness. I don’t appreciate it, and I get paid for doing stuff like that, so if you’re gonna do it without me, you’re robbing me.’

The rise of AI technology capable of replicating famous voices presents a significant challenge to actors and creators, potentially devaluing their unique talents and the work they’ve put into developing their craft. Freeman feels this technology is costing him valuable opportunities.

    Legal Action and Continued Commitment

In response to discovering multiple projects using his voice without permission, Freeman has initiated legal action. ‘Well, I tell you, my lawyers have been very, very busy,’ he admitted. This move signals a firm stance against the misuse of his vocal likeness.

Despite the evolving landscape of the entertainment industry and criticism surrounding AI-generated talent, Freeman shows no signs of slowing down. Having started his career in the 1960s, he remains passionate about acting. He mentioned that the idea of retirement occasionally crosses his mind, but the allure of new job offers quickly reignites his drive.

AI Talent Not a Real Threat?

Regarding AI-generated performers, like the recently unveiled ‘Tilly Norwood,’ Freeman remains skeptical. He believes that audiences connect with authenticity and that AI creations lack the genuine human element necessary for compelling performances in film and television. ‘Nobody likes her because she’s not real, and that takes the part of a real person, so it’s not going to work out very well in the movies or on television,’ he stated.
