Michael Jai White & Lisa Arrindell on ‘The Secret Between Us’

What happens when a long-buried secret threatens to unravel a seemingly perfect life? Michael Jai White and Lisa Arrindell are bringing this powerful premise to the screen in their new film, ‘The Secret Between Us.’ The drama, which premiered earlier this month and is currently in select theaters, delves into the complexities of family, infidelity, and the challenging path to forgiveness.

A Story That Resonates Universally

Michael Jai White, who stars as Jack Frazier, a man whose life is upended when a son from a past affair resurfaces, notes the story’s widespread relatability. “It’s been 9 out of 10 people have had a direct connection to that type of phenomenon — whether it’s themselves, or some other family member or even a parent,” he shared with TheGrio. The film explores this deeply human experience, highlighting that such secrets are more common than we might think.

Lisa Arrindell, portraying Jack’s wife Wanda, navigates the emotional fallout in real-time. While not a personal experience, the theme felt close to home. “I have seen this not in my immediate family, but definitely in my family. I’ve heard of it, and the shock that happens when you only find out after the person passes away,” she said. Arrindell believes writer and director Tamera Hill’s approach of confronting the secret in real-time offers a powerful reflection on truth, forgiveness, and the courage to accept unexpected realities.

Facing the Truth: Character Evolution

What makes Jack Frazier a compelling character, according to both actors, is not just the surfacing of his secret, but his response. Instead of denial, he confronts it head-on. “He says, yes, I am the man. Yes, I’m the one you’re looking for. Yes, I did that. How many women, y’all, ladies, how many of us would love — I would just love if the first response was, yes, I did that,” Arrindell remarked.

This honesty challenges Wanda to face her own buried truths, prompting a journey of accountability. White sees Jack’s struggle as a reflection of modern manhood, which requires evolution beyond traditional paradigms towards empathy, sympathy, and self-understanding to provide security for loved ones.

A Remarkable Production Journey

The film’s emotional depth is matched by its production story. ‘The Secret Between Us’ was filmed in an astonishing 10 days, with the most challenging scene—a heated confrontation between Jack, Wanda, and their daughter—shot on the very first day. Both White and Arrindell credit thorough preparation for navigating this intense schedule. “Part of greatness is being prepared, showing up prepared,” Arrindell stated.

The ensemble cast, including television legend Victoria Rowell as the witty and wise nurse Maxine, also impressed the leads. Rowell’s character, inspired by a family member she wished to honor, added significant depth to the narrative.

Destiny and Preparation: The Leads’ Path

The casting of White and Arrindell itself is a story of destiny. Fifteen years prior, White had expressed a desire to work with Arrindell, a sentiment she initially dismissed as small talk. However, when casting for ‘The Secret Between Us,’ White specifically requested her, demonstrating a commitment to their shared professional future. “When God has something for you, even if it appears to belong to someone else, it’s going to come to you,” Arrindell reflected.

The film’s core message revolves around forgiveness—not the easy kind, but the hard-won, imperfect forgiveness of real life. White emphasizes that forgiveness benefits the forgiver, likening holding onto anger to “holding on to hot coals.” Arrindell adds a powerful perspective: “The thing that’s broken is being put back together again, but there are cracks there. And we are still able to live and be well with the cracks.”

I’ve already forgiven you, but it doesn’t mean that I’m not mad. — Lisa Arrindell (as Wanda)

Executive producer Keith Sweat, who has watched the film multiple times and still gets emotional, urges everyone to see it. “Bring your friends, bring your family, bring your enemies, bring everybody, just come and see it,” Arrindell relayed from Sweat. ‘The Secret Between Us’ ultimately portrays how a Black family can navigate betrayal and secrets to emerge stronger, together.
