The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is once again solidifying its reputation as a leader in healthcare education. In a new national evaluation by U.S. News & World Report, UAB’s Master of Science in Health Administration (MSHA) program has secured the coveted No. 1 ranking, reaffirming its status as the best in the United States.
A Consistent Leader in Health Professions
UAB’s School of Health Professions, which serves over 2,500 students, has a long-standing history of excellence, consistently ranking among the top medical education programs for decades. The peer-driven ranking process involves academic leaders and administrators nationwide assessing program quality and rigor for training future healthcare executives. UAB’s MSHA program stands out among prestigious institutions like the University of Michigan and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
University officials attribute this top ranking to the program’s distinctive curriculum and its close ties to a major academic medical center. Health administration students at UAB often benefit from residency programs and administrative fellowships within the UAB Health System, providing invaluable hands-on experience in managing a large-scale clinical environment.
Broader Excellence Across Graduate Programs
This recognition for healthcare management is part of a larger trend of excellence for UAB. The latest U.S. News & World Report rankings also highlighted several other graduate programs within the School of Health Professions, as well as programs in nursing and public health, which received high marks. Janet Woodruff-Borden, Ph.D., Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, commented, “UAB’s continued prominence in these rankings reflects our commitment to offering world-class academic programs and research experiences, some of them the first of their kind regionally and nationally.”
The university’s impact extends beyond academics; UAB is the largest employer in Alabama, playing a significant role in driving the regional economy. While other Alabama institutions were also recognized in the 2026 rankings for various graduate disciplines, UAB’s undisputed No. 1 national position in health administration remains a standout achievement.
