United Airlines Adds New Premium Fare Tiers

Planning a long-haul flight with United Airlines? Get ready for some new choices! United is revamping how it sells tickets for its premium cabins, Polaris and Premium Plus, by introducing tiered fare options. The airline says this move is all about giving you more control over your travel experience.

More Choice, More Control

Starting soon on select international, transcontinental U.S., and Hawaii routes, you’ll find three distinct fare categories for Polaris and Premium Plus: base, standard, and flexible. This structure mirrors what you might already be familiar with in United’s economy class.

The idea is simple: lower prices come with fewer benefits, while higher prices offer more perks. This allows travelers to pick a fare that best suits their budget and needs, whether they prioritize saving money or enjoying all the premium amenities.

What Each Tier Offers

So, what exactly do these new tiers mean for your journey? For Polaris, the ‘base’ fare will typically include one checked bag (down from two), access to a United Club instead of the exclusive Polaris Lounge, and a fee for advance seat selection. These base fares will be nonrefundable and nonchangeable.

The ‘standard’ fare will likely resemble the current nonrefundable premium ticket, offering a balance of perks. The ‘flexible’ fare will be the most premium option, providing refundability and all the associated benefits. A similar structure applies to Premium Plus, though these fares don’t include Polaris lounge access, and base fares won’t be eligible for upgrades.

Why This Change Matters

United’s Chief Commercial Officer, Andrew Nocella, stated that these new options provide “more choice” and make it easier for customers to find a fare that aligns with the benefits they value most. For travelers, this means a greater need to carefully review what’s included before booking.

While a lower upfront price for a premium seat might be tempting, it’s important to consider if you’ll need to pay extra for benefits you previously received as standard. United has also updated its website and app to help customers compare these new categories more easily.
