Black2Zanzibar: A Juneteenth Homecoming

Imagine celebrating Juneteenth not just with fireworks and cookouts, but with a journey to the heart of East Africa. This June, Black2Zanzibar is making that a reality, hosting an inaugural three-day festival in the stunning locale of Zanzibar, Tanzania. This event promises a unique blend of cultural immersion, community building, and intentional exploration for the Black diaspora.

An Inaugural Celebration of Connection

Founded by Chanice Williams (Urban Flight Collective), Lisa Shakespeare (content creator), and Dominic Adams (healthcare professional and travel advisor), Black2Zanzibar is more than just a festival; it’s a homecoming. The event aims to strengthen bonds across the diaspora, offering attendees a chance to connect, celebrate Juneteenth, and delve into the rich culture of Zanzibar.

Guests can expect a curated experience that goes beyond typical tourist activities. Planned excursions include photoshoots, a private Maasai dinner, exploring Zanzibar’s vibrant nightlife, and opportunities to learn about the island’s complex history, including its role in the East African slave trade. The goal is to foster a deep understanding and connection with the land and its people.

The Vision Behind Black2Zanzibar

Chanice Williams, also known online as ‘Fly With Queenie,’ is a first-generation Jamaican American travel content creator passionate about highlighting Africa and diaspora-connected destinations. Her company, Urban Flight Collective, organizes group trips, and Black2Zanzibar was born from conversations during one such trip to Cuba. Inspired by her own ancestry exploration through DNA testing, Williams aims to create a powerful sense of belonging for attendees.

“More than anything, I hope attendees leave with a sense of home and belonging on the continent,” Williams shared. “I want people to walk away feeling proud, connected, and inspired to explore even more countries across Africa.” She chose Tanzania for its approachability, vibrant culture, stunning beauty, and unique mix of experiences, aiming to shine a light on East Africa’s incredible offerings.
