A’ja Wilson: Dyslexia, Met Gala, and Mentoring

You can’t achieve your dreams if you can’t envision them. That’s the powerful message behind the Disney Dreamers Academy (DDA), and this year, WNBA superstar A’ja Wilson was there to embody it. The Las Vegas Aces forward-center joined 100 selected teens at Walt Disney World for a four-day program focused on inspiration, mentorship, and chasing your biggest goals.

A Champion’s Message to Dreamers

Wilson, a decorated athlete with multiple MVP awards, championships, and Olympic gold medals, connected with the students, sharing her own journey. “My message [is] don’t let anyone steal your dream,” she urged. “Don’t let anyone make you feel like it’s not attainable. You have to live the life you want to live and be true to who you are because that’s what really matters the most.”

The experience was clearly meaningful for Wilson, too. “This has been a great experience for me. To be able to connect with Dreamers and to also be able to meet my dream princess [Tiana] has been a truly surreal moment,” she shared, beaming. She even joked about who she’d pick for a 3-on-3 game: Princess Tiana, followed by Mulan!

Beyond the Court: Personal Insights

Beyond her athletic achievements, Wilson opened up about personal aspects of her life. Featured in this month’s Vogue, she’s also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. When asked about her upcoming Met Gala debut as part of the host committee, she playfully hinted at a special, yet-to-be-revealed look, acknowledging the challenge of fitting it into her demanding season schedule.

Perhaps most impactfully, Wilson spoke candidly about her experience with dyslexia. Her vulnerability in discussing her learning disability offered a sense of validation for any attendees facing similar challenges. She encouraged everyone to confront their obstacles head-on, reinforcing the idea that “Dreams are limitless!”

  • Embrace your dreams and don’t let others discourage you.
