Mayor Scott Fights Digital Racism

In today’s political arena, Black leadership often faces unwarranted scrutiny. But Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott is drawing a line in the sand, refusing to stay silent in the face of escalating racist attacks. He’s using his platform not just to expose the ‘vile hatred’ directed at him, but to redefine what it means to be a Black leader in power in 2026 America.

Exposing Digital Terror

On March 27th, Mayor Scott took to Instagram, sharing a series of screenshots that laid bare the racist and threatening messages he’s been receiving. These messages, filled with Jim Crow-era slurs and accusations of him being a ‘criminal kingpin,’ offer a stark look at the online vitriol targeting Black officials. Scott’s decision to publicly share this content is a deliberate strategy to expose the emboldened nature of modern prejudice.

This isn’t the first time Scott has faced such attacks. Following the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in 2024, critics, unable to find policy failures, labeled him a ‘DEI mayor.’ Scott famously retorted that his detractors were simply ‘afraid to use the N-word,’ a sentiment his recent posts seem to confirm.

Redefining DEI and Challenging Narratives

Scott isn’t just exposing the hate; he’s actively pushing back. He’s offered a sharp redefinition of the acronym ‘DEI’ used by his detractors: ‘Duly Elected Incumbent. Definitely Earned It.’ This reframe challenges the narrative that Black leadership is undeserved or inherently flawed. Scott argues that these attacks are part of a coordinated national effort to paint Black-led cities as failures, using him as a proxy.

He stated in a previous interview, ‘What these folks who unfortunately think that way think is that unless you are a straight white male from a certain background… you shouldn’t be here.’ Instead of shrinking under the pressure, Scott has embraced transparency, rejecting ‘respectability politics’ that demand silence in the face of dehumanization.

Governing Amidst the Noise

While online trolls attempt to paint him as a failure, Mayor Scott is presiding over a city with a nearly 50-year low in homicides. His focus, particularly as the 2026 Chair of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council (BMC), is on data-driven, equitable infrastructure improvements. His legislative priorities for 2026 are practical, focusing on issues like sales tax remission for vacant property reduction and property tax rebates for homeowners.

The racialized hatred he faces seems to stem from a place of panic – the panic of seeing a Black man successfully wield power without apology. Scott’s experience mirrors a broader global trend of democratic backsliding and the targeting of minority leaders through online harassment and legal tactics.

A New Era of Black Political Survival

Scott’s strategy of defiance, including witty comebacks and wearing shirts that celebrate ‘Blackness,’ is rewriting the playbook for modern Black political survival. He embodies the idea that true political victory involves not only winning office but also fighting for the right to hold that position without being erased by online mobs. As he puts it, ‘We have to be bigger, Blacker, and louder than ever.’
