Obama: Let the Next Generation Lead

Former President Barack Obama is making it clear: he believes the future is in the hands of the next generation. As the nation looks towards upcoming elections and the opening of his Presidential Library, Obama is advocating for a shift in leadership, emphasizing the fresh perspectives and energy younger leaders can bring.

Passing the Torch to New Leaders

During a conversation with Olivia Walton at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Obama expressed his hope that the challenges facing the country today can be solved by empowering emerging leaders. He stated, ‘My bet is that all the problems we have right now will be solved if old folks get out of the way and we turn the reins over to this next generation.’

Obama envisions this next wave of leaders applying timeless American values to contemporary issues. His Presidential Library, set to open in Chicago in 2026, is intended to be a hub for fostering this new generation of thinkers and doers.

A Different Approach to News and Democracy

The former President also shared his unique approach to staying informed, admitting he hasn’t watched cable news in over 15 years. He prefers reading a variety of publications, a habit he believes contributes to his calm demeanor, often quipping, ‘No drama, Obama.’ This deliberate distance from the constant news cycle allows for a more focused perspective.

Obama reflected on the state of American democracy, noting that it’s more divided and unstable than at any point in his lifetime, though he acknowledges historical precedents like the Civil War. He expressed concern over the erosion of norms, particularly the challenging of election legitimacy and the peaceful transfer of power, stressing that no one is above the law.

The Dream of Solitude

During his time in the White House, Obama recalled a recurring dream that offered a glimpse into his desire for peace and anonymity. He dreamt of sitting alone on a park bench, unrecognized and free from demands, simply enjoying a soda. This simple dream highlights the immense pressure and constant attention that comes with the presidency.

The “Building Bridges” lecture series at Crystal Bridges aims to foster curiosity, courage, and care – principles Obama hopes can help bridge the current political divide. His message is a powerful call for renewal, urging a transition to new leadership equipped to face the future.
