Justice has been served in Mississippi, where Sheldon “Timothy” Herrington Jr. has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for the brutal murder of Jimmie “Jay” Lee, a University of Mississippi graduate student and prominent member of the local LGBTQ+ community. The two men were secretly involved, a relationship that prosecutors believe led to Lee’s tragic death.
A Guilty Plea and a Reduced Charge
Herrington Jr. pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, a reduction from the original capital murder charge. This plea resulted in a sentence of 40 years for the killing, with an additional 10 years suspended. He also received a consecutive 10-year sentence for tampering with evidence, meaning he will spend a total of 40 years behind bars.
The case began in July 2022 when the then 20-year-old Lee disappeared from the Ole Miss campus. Herrington Jr., an alumnus himself, was arrested two weeks later, shortly before Lee’s body was discovered. The initial trial ended in a mistrial after jurors couldn’t reach a consensus, but the discovery of Lee’s remains by hunters earlier this year paved the way for a new trial and this eventual guilty plea.
Evidence Points to a Crime of Passion and Secrecy
During the first trial, prosecutors argued that Herrington Jr. murdered Lee to keep their secret relationship hidden. Lee was reportedly very popular both locally and online, making the clandestine nature of their affair a key motive. Surveillance footage showed Lee visiting Herrington Jr.’s apartment multiple times in the early morning hours.
Crucially, timestamps revealed that Herrington Jr. had searched online for “how long does it take to strangle someone” shortly before Lee’s second arrival. Law enforcement also testified about exchanged sexual messages between the two men. Further evidence included Herrington Jr. being seen on camera fleeing the area where Lee’s car was found and leaving his parents’ home with a shovel and wheelbarrow, suggesting an attempt to conceal the crime.
