Shedeur Sanders Defends Coach, Shows Maturity

Rookie NFL quarterback Shedeur Sanders is already showing he’s got the poise of a seasoned pro, especially when it comes to handling the media. After the Cleveland Browns’ recent 26-8 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Sanders faced a reporter’s question that could have easily led to him throwing his coach under the bus. But he didn’t.

A ‘Rude Question’ and a Mature Response

During the post-game press conference, a reporter asked Sanders about two failed fourth-and-one plays, questioning if he liked head coach Kevin Stefanski’s aggressive play-calling in those situations, especially given their field position. Sensing the potential for a negative spin, Sanders didn’t hesitate to shut it down.

“I mean, first, that’s a rude question to ask,” Sanders stated directly. He quickly followed up, emphasizing his support for his coach: “If I think, you know, it was a great call by my coach, you know?”

Veteran-Like Composure

When the reporter tried to rephrase the question about liking the aggressiveness, Sanders leaned into a response that echoed the wisdom of his NFL Hall of Fame father, Deion Sanders. He expressed his focus on playing the game and executing plays, rather than pointing fingers.

“We’re not gonna be and ever point fingers at coach or do anything like that. That’s extremely disrespectful, and that’s not even in my place,” Sanders explained. He added that he’s thankful for the opportunity to play and for the trust placed in him and the offense, even acknowledging the lack of execution on those specific plays.

Sanders’ Rookie Season So Far

This game marked Sanders’ second start and third appearance of his rookie season with the Browns. He first saw NFL action on November 16th when starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel entered concussion protocol. Sanders then earned his first start against the Las Vegas Raiders, leading the team to a win, and was given the starting nod again for the game against the 49ers. Coach Stefanski has confirmed Sanders will continue as the starter for Week 14.
