Fulton County Faces ‘Domestic Violence Epidemic’

Fulton County, Georgia, is grappling with a severe surge in domestic violence cases, prompting District Attorney Fani Willis to declare the situation a full-blown “domestic violence epidemic.” The Metro Atlanta area is currently facing nearly 1,000 pending felony domestic abuse cases, highlighting a critical issue that demands immediate attention for the safety of its residents.

The Scale of the Crisis

DA Fani Willis has been vocal about the escalating problem, stating, “We are absolutely in a domestic violence epidemic.” Her office’s Domestic Violence Division is intensifying efforts to secure justice for victims. However, the path to justice is proving challenging, with convictions often stalled by hung juries and mixed verdicts.

The difficulties faced by victims and prosecutors are significant. One victim, Troy King, shared his harrowing experience, recounting the fear he felt during the three trials his assaulter, Darrius Berry, underwent before a felony aggravated battery conviction. “I was quite sure I was gonna die that night,” King stated, underscoring the severity of the violence.

Obstacles to Justice

Beyond trial challenges, victims often face immense fear and manipulation from their abusers, leading to an unwillingness to testify. When victims refuse to speak, prosecutors must rely on alternative evidence like camera footage or 911 calls to build a case. “Victims are under the power and control of their abuser,” explained Deputy DA Asia Baysah, illustrating the complex dynamics involved.

The Georgia Commission on Family Violence reported over 42,000 incidents of family violence last year, a 23% increase since 2023. Women constitute 70% of these reported victims, and nationally, about 41% of women experience intimate partner violence, encompassing physical and sexual abuse, stalking, and harassment.

Disproportionate Impact on Black Women

This crisis has a particularly devastating impact on Black women. With Black individuals making up 42.6% of Fulton County’s population, and studies indicating that over 4 in 10 Black women face intimate partner violence in their lifetime, the local surge in cases is deeply concerning. Research also shows Black women face higher threats of being killed by their partners compared to white women.

In response to these alarming statistics and the local rise in domestic violence, the Fulton County DA’s office is committed to ensuring fair and efficient trials. Their goal is to provide victims with the justice and safety they deserve, working tirelessly to hold abusers accountable.
