Jesse Jackson Leaves Hospital After Neurological Treatment

Great news for civil rights icon Jesse Jackson and his supporters! The 84-year-old leader has been discharged from Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He had been receiving treatment for a rare neurological disorder, marking a significant step in his recovery journey.

A Change in Diagnosis and Continued Care

Jackson’s son, Yusef Jackson, who also serves as the family spokesperson, confirmed the discharge on Tuesday, stating his father was released Monday. This follows a hospitalization that began on November 14th. It’s important to note that Jackson’s health journey has evolved; he was initially diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2013.

However, his diagnosis was updated in April to progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a neurodegenerative disorder that can present symptoms similar to Parkinson’s. While he now receives round-the-clock care at home, his family expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support.

A Legacy of Activism and Support

Yusef Jackson extended thanks to the many friends, supporters, and prayer warriors who have reached out, visited, and offered their well wishes. He also acknowledged the dedicated medical and security staff at Northwestern Memorial Hospital for their care. The family humbly requests continued prayers during this important time.

Jackson, a renowned protégé of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and a two-time presidential candidate, founded the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition. Despite his health challenges, he continued to be an active public figure, even after announcing his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2017. He made appearances, including at the 2024 Democratic National Convention.

Continued Dedication and Family Support

Although he stepped down as leader of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition in 2023, an organization he started as Operation PUSH in 1971, Jackson remained connected to the office until recently. His family, including sons U.S. Rep. Jonathan Jackson and former Illinois congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., have been providing dedicated care in shifts. While he uses a wheelchair and struggles with speech and keeping his eyes open, his spirit and legacy continue to inspire.
