Officer Acquitted in Shooting Death of Pregnant Mother

A tragic incident in Ohio has concluded with a verdict that has sent ripples through the community. Blendon Township police officer Connor Grubb, who was charged in connection with the death of 21-year-old Ta’Kiya Young, a pregnant Black mother, has been acquitted of all charges. This includes murder, involuntary manslaughter, and felonious assault, meaning he will not face the potential life sentence he could have received.

The Incident and the Charges

The events unfolded on August 24, 2023, when officers Grubb and Sgt. Erick Moynihan approached Young’s car in a supermarket parking lot. They suspected her of stealing alcohol from a Kroger store. Bodycam footage captured the tense encounter, showing Young refusing to exit her vehicle and protesting as officers cursed and yelled at her. Grubb had his hand on the car’s hood while pointing his gun at Young, who asked, ‘Are you going to shoot me?’

According to the recording, Young then signaled and her car began to slowly roll forward towards Grubb. He fired a single shot into her chest through the windshield. In a written statement, Grubb stated he was positioned in front of the vehicle to provide backup and protect others. He claimed he drew his weapon when Young failed to comply and that he felt the car hit his legs and shins, lifting him off the ground as he fired.

The Trial and the Verdict

During the two-week trial, jurors viewed the bodycam video and heard testimony from various experts, including a use-of-force expert and an accident reconstructionist. However, they did not hear directly from Officer Grubb; his account was presented through a written statement read by a special agent. Prosecutors were unable to question him directly.

Franklin County Common Pleas Judge David Young (no relation to Ta’Kiya) dismissed four of the ten counts related to the death of Young’s unborn daughter. This decision was based on the defense’s argument that prosecutors failed to prove Grubb knew Young was pregnant at the time of the shooting. Ultimately, the jury found Grubb not guilty of the remaining charges.

Family’s Perspective and Unanswered Questions

Ta’Kiya Young’s family, represented by attorney Sean Walton, has maintained that she did not steal anything. Walton stated that a witness saw Young leave bottles of alcohol in the store, meaning she wasn’t committing theft when confronted by officers. ‘She did not commit any theft, and so these officers were not even within their right to place her under arrest, let alone take her life,’ Walton commented shortly after the shooting.

Young, who was also mother to two young sons, ages 8 and 5, tragically died along with her unborn daughter at a hospital. Her sons are now being raised by their grandmother, Nadine Young. The acquittal leaves many questions and deep sorrow for the family and community members advocating for accountability in cases of police violence.
